Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth respond to 90210 costar Vanessa Marcil’s claims of on-set ‘cattiness’

They previously weathered allegations of snobby behavior from former costar Jessica Alba. 

And now, Beverly Hills, 90210 costars and real-life friends Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth have taken on new claims of not-nice onset antics from another former cast member, namely Vanessa Marcil.

Marcil, 52, said on an Instagram Live last month that the pair exhibited ‘cattiness’ towards her when she was a series regular on the Fox show’s ninth and tenth seasons back in 1998-2000. 

‘I was so hurt when I was working there that I felt like I was sideswiped by the cattiness and not being liked,’ Vanessa, who shares son Kassius, 19, with fellow 90210-er Brian Austin Green, said in the February 21st IG Live session. ‘I wasn’t expecting it.’

She added: ‘[Garth] said, “Maybe it would help if you didn’t walk around like somebody who isn’t liked?”… So I realized maybe I had taken it so personally… that now I was walking around like someone who isn’t liked.’ 

Marcil went on to say that Tori and Jennie’s behavior is ‘just a reflection of how they feel about themselves. It doesn’t even mean that they’re bad people. They just don’t have room for you in that moment. …I took it too personally to the point that I quit.’

But in the latest episode of the actress pair’s 9021OMG podcast, Spelling, 47, claimed incredulity at Garth, 48, for ever being able to say such things in the first place.

‘What the f**k does that mean?’ the mother of five exclaimed. ‘I’m going to go on record that you didn’t say that. No matter how she phrases it, it has a negative connotation to it.

‘You and Vanessa weren’t that close,’ Tori later added. ‘She played my cousin; I worked a lot with her. I don’t remember you guys having that many interactions. I don’t believe that you would take it upon yourself to be like, “Here’s why you’re acting like someone who’s not liked, so that’s why you’re not liked.”‘

Jennie, meanwhile, said she had no recollection of the interaction, and instead took the long view.

‘There’s always been this energy of a competitive environment [in showbusiness] amongst, especially, women,’ the actress most well known for playing Kelly Taylor said. ‘And that has shifted now in a beautiful way and now the messaging is different.’

To conclude, Tori allowed, ‘From my perception, Vanessa was a kick-ass girl. She came in confident, beautiful, good actress, a professional, always showed up. I don’t remember her having a bad time, but I don’t know what was going on inside.’

The minor tiff comes after Jessica Alba, who appeared in two episodes of the hit ’90s teen drama in 1998, publicly claimed last year that she wasn’t allowed to even make eye contact with the stars while on set. 

Garth said at the time: ‘I had all the scenes with her. If anybody didn’t want to have their eyes looked into, it would’ve been me, but I don’t remember ‘cause I have the world’s worst memory.’ 

Tori got speculative as she wondered if Fox’s producers had passed around a ‘cool memo’ without giving notice to the cast.

She explained: ‘Imagine we just thought guest stars didn’t like us? ‘They never looked at us! We don’t know why. We were so nice.’

Garth gushed about Alba as she said: ‘From the vague memories I have of working with her, I only remember her being super talented. She was very young, and she was really sweet.

‘It does not surprise me that she’s gone on to be so successful.’
