She also has to decide how to handle the legal side of the tragedy, facing the midwife in court.

The trailer opens with the couple getting ready for the birth, clearly excited to be welcoming their child.

‘I wanted to stay at home. I wanted the baby to decide when she wanted to come,’ she says of having a home birth.

They are seen preparing to welcome the child, with Martha going into labour. But sirens are heard, Sean is seen running into the street and Martha’s face turns from excitement to sadness.

She is seen running errands, looking vacant, her mother asking how she’s doing.

She then visits a lawyer, who tells her: ’67 per cent of these cases – we rarely find a satisfactory explanation. Certain things medically, we just don’t have answers for.’

Martha is pictured on a train, watching a little girl sadly, as her mother is heard telling her to attend the midwife’s trial.

‘She has to pay for her incompetence!’ she says. ‘We need some justice here!’

But Martha appears to disagree. She is seen arguing with her mother and husband, before eventually taking the stand at the trial.

‘Who cares about what they think. This is about me. This is about my life. This is me!’ she says, as the trailer ends.

The film is directed by Kornél Mundruczó, written by Kata Wéber, and executive produced by Martin Scorsese.

It’s scheduled to hit cinemas on December 30 and be released on Netflix on January 7.
