Vicky Pattison reveals she has removed her contraceptive implant

‘My body is contraception-free’: Vicky Pattison reveals she has removed her implant ‘for the foreseeable future’ – but insists she is not trying for a baby

Vicky Pattison has revealed she is ‘contraception free’ after having her implant removed to combat complications she has suffered.

Taking to Instagram on Thursday, the former Geordie Shore star, 33, shared a lengthy caption in which she joked that her boyfriend Ercan Ramadan needed to buy condoms since she had removed the rod from her arm.

After documenting her trip to the doctors for the procedure, which comprises a small incision made to the arm to remove the plastic rod, she assured fans she had no plans to try for a baby having sparked earlier speculation.

Vicky and Ercan have been dating since 2018, and while she admits they are blissfully happy, she insists babies are not in the near future.

The contraceptive implants are matchstick-sized tubes which are inserted under the skin of the arm. They last for three years and work by releasing a steady dose of the hormone progesterone which prevents ovaries from releasing an egg every month.

Vicky admitted she was scared about the removal, which sees the doctor reply local anesthetic, make a small incision and slide the rod out of the arm.

After the removal she showed pictures of her bandaged arm on Instagram and then shared a throwback shot from a promo campaign for Durex alongside a lengthy caption detailing her reasons for going contraception free.

‘Please understand I’m not angry at all and I totally love that you guys are this invested in my uterus and I can totally see how you’d arrive at that conclusion- but honestly, I’m afraid that’s definitely not where I’m at right now…

‘Although I’d love motherhood to be a part of my future- I am just not ready for that step. We are not ready for that step. I had my implant taken out as I’ve been on this particular contraception a very long time…

‘Based on the terrible trouble I’m having with my lady days (all very well documented on insta for your viewing pleasure btw in case you had somehow missed my whinging) the doctor and I both agreed it would be right for me to give my body a break entirely for a while…

‘This break felt right! I’m really hoping this helps me get a handle on my hormones and improves aunt flows unpredictable and downright abrasive visits (cow bag) But seriously, I love your interest and concern for me- you guys are the best…

‘Right then, I’m off condom shopping… much to Ercan’s disgust… Come on son, don’t be a fool… it’s time to wrap your tool! Toodles… Ps how old and cringe is this picture?! My side smirk and terrible hair piece have me in BITS’.

WHAT IS THE CONTRACEPTIVE IMPLANT?

The contraceptive implants are matchstick-sized tubes which are inserted under the skin of the arm.

They last for three years and work by releasing a steady dose of the hormone progesterone. This prevents ovaries from releasing an egg every month and also thickens the lining of the cervix – preventing sperm from entering.

In addition, it thins the lining of the womb, making it less likely that a fertilised egg can implant.

The implants – known by the brand name Nexplanon – can be fitted by a specially trained GP or nurse. Girls undergo a brief consultation to ensure they do not have any underlying health conditions which would put them at risk. These include heart disease, liver disease or being pregnant.

Side effects include mood swings, disrupted or constant periods, headaches, pain and weight gain.

In rare cases the implants have been inserted incorrectly and travelled to the lungs or major veins.

Experts say they are 99 per cent effective and far more reliable than remembering to take the Pill or using a condom. They take only a few minutes to be fitted and girls are given a local anaesthetic.
