Warner Bros confirms Dune will be released in theaters and HBO Max on SAME day after conflicting report

Warner Bros confirmed via Twitter that Dune will be released later this year simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.

Johanna Fuentes, head of communications at Warner Media, took to Twitter on Monday to clarify the release schedule for the highly anticipated sci-fi film due out on October 1.

‘#Dune will premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day in the US. (Source: Warner Bros.),’ Fuentes tweeted along with a re-tweet of a post Monday by Discussing Film that read ‘DUNE is no longer expected to go day and date on HBO Max. (Source: Deadline)’.

Deadline later updated its article published Monday to add a statement from Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeff Goldstein saying there had been ‘no change’ to the release plan for Dune and it will open in theaters the same day it arrives on HBO Max.

Dune director Denis Villeneuve, 53, last December blasted Warner Bros for its bombshell announcement that all of its 2021 movies would debut in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously.

The French Canadian filmmaker wrote an op-ed for Variety in which he vented his frustrations over the major studio’s move.

He wrote: ‘Warner Bros.’ sudden reversal from being a legacy home for filmmakers to the new era of complete disregard draws a clear line for me.’

‘Filmmaking is a collaboration, reliant on the mutual trust of team work and Warner Bros. has declared they are no longer on the same team,’ he added.

He also was critical of how images from Dune were used to promote the streaming service.

”With this decision AT&T has hijacked one of the most respectable and important studios in film history. There is absolutely no love for cinema, nor for the audience here,’ he said.

The upcoming Dune movie is an adaptation of the 1965 novel of the same name by Frank Herbert.

The ensemble cast includes: Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, David Dastmalchian, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling and Jason Momoa.

Dune is scheduled to be released on October 1 by Warner Bros Pictures along with a month-long simultaneous release on HBO Max.
