What to wear this weekend: FEMAIL picks out the best monochrome items for effortless style this season

WHY IT WORKS

There’s a simple reason why the pairing of black and white has enduring fashion appeal; this classic combination draws the eye to the wearer without the distraction of vibrant colour.

No wonder the late, great Karl Lagerfeld made it his style signature during the 36 years he reigned at Chanel. And this summer, it’s one of the biggest trends.

MONO MORALE

If you haven’t got your socialising mojo back yet post-lockdown, a monochrome look will give you a sharp, chic confidence boost. That’s exactly how I feel wearing this checked dress by Baukjen; the punchy effect shouts ‘I’m back!’ and the lightweight fabric is perfect for sunny days.

COLOUR PERMISSION

I like to work monochrome head to toe, so pick out black-and-white accessories, too, such as these comfortable wedges. A pop of colour is allowed if you prefer a livelier mix, but make it a bag or heels, not both.

A slick of red lipstick, however, is the perfect finishing touch (my favourite is Charlotte Tilbury’s shade of Electric Poppy). And don’t go anywhere without a pair of oversized black Jackie O sunglasses.

DESIGN SIMPLICITY

Because monochrome is such a straightforward concept, it works best in fuss-free designs like this dress (right) which has no collar and little detailing.

And it will always be an investment buy. You can wear the knitted top from Mango and dress from Hobbs (below) year after year without any signs of them dating.
