Alicia Silverstone remembers her first impressions of late Clueless costar Brittany Murphy as film turns 25: ‘I think she’s the one!’

Alicia Silverstone looked back on her experiences with her former Clueless costar Brittany Murphy in a recent chat in commemoration of the film’s 25-year anniversary.

The 43-year-old actress reminisced with Vogue about the hit comedy, which arrived in theaters July 21, 1995.

Silverstone, who played the role of Cher Horowitz in the movie, said she had high hopes early on for Murphy, who was cast in the role of Tai in the comedy hit after acing her audition.

‘I just remember thinking she was so great for the part,’ Silverstone said. ‘I can’t remember how many girls came in to audition for Tai that day and I don’t know if I saw a few girls for it or just her, but I remember Brittany being really adorable.’

She said she thought Murphy – who died at 32 on December 20, 2009 at her Hollywood Hills home – was ‘so wonderful’ and she told director Amy Heckerling that she thought Murphy was the right pick to play Tai.

‘I said to Amy right away, “I think she’s the one! She was the best one you guys!” hoping they would agree. ‘She was like, “Uh yeah, duh.” Of course she was the best, she’s the one.”‘

Silverstone said she remembered Murphy’s mother Sharon ‘was on set a lot’ during production of the mid-90s hit.

‘I brought my mom around a little bit and we would all spend time together,’ she said. ‘But I don’t think we had any intellectual idea about us being up-and-comers in a big movie because we didn’t know we were in a big movie. Maybe other people knew, but I was so innocent and never really paying attention to career stuff at all.’

Silverstone said the attention surrounding the motion picture – which, according to Box Office Mojo, took in more than $56 million in domestic box office and left an indelible imprint on pop culture – ‘was really intense.

‘I didn’t expect any of the reaction that we got,’ said Silverstone, who rose to fame in the early 90s appearing in Aerosmith’s Cryin’ video. ‘It was a lot, and I think if anything it all pushed me away from doing this job for a while and got me so much more into my activism.

‘I eventually found my love of acting again, but at the time I didn’t know anything about what I was stepping into.’

Silverstone, who’s mom to son Bear, nine, with actor/musician Christopher Jarecki, is currently doing voiceover work on Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation as Queen Marlena.

Murphy, who was also known for her roles in Girl, Interrupted and 8 Mile, was tragically found dead after dealing with flu-like symptoms; her husband Simon Monjack died at 40 five months after she did.
