Anthony Mackie reveals he heard the news about Captain America 4 while in line at the grocery store

Just hours after the Marvel series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier wrapped up its six-episode season on Disney Plus, it was revealed the studio is moving forward with a fourth Captain America movie, though Anthony Mackie didn’t hear the news.

While it hasn’t been officially confirmed that Mackie will return as the new Captain America, the movie will be written by The Falcon and the Winter Soldier creator/showrunner Malcolm Spellman along with staff writer Dalan Musson.

The end of the series revealed that Mackie’s Sam Wilson, a.k.a. The Falcon, has become the new Captain America, though Mackie told EW that he only found out yesterday at a grocery store.

When asked his thoughts about the upcoming movie, Mackie said he was first told by a grocery store clerk named Dwayne.

‘I literally found out yesterday in a grocery store. The checkout guy named Dwayne, a cool cat, he’s like, “Yo, man. Is this real?!”‘ while holding up a phone.

‘I’m like, “I haven’t heard anything.” That’s what I love about working for Marvel. They call you, they’re like, “Come to L.A. We wanna tell you what’s going on.” So, I’m excited to see what happens, but I haven’t heard anything,’ he added.

No director has been attached for the movie yet, and no story details have surfaced, but Marvel made it abundantly clear that Sam is the new Cap by changing the title card from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to Captain America and the Winter Soldier.

Wilson donned a Wakanda-designed flight suit with the red white and blue colors while keeping his wings.

Since he knows nothing about the movie, Mackie joked, ‘What would be really bad is if the movie starts and I get blown out of the sky.’

He added that he hasn’t heard anything about a potential second season of the Disney Plus series, but he’d be glad to work with everyone again.

‘It’s always great to go to work with Sebastian (Stan). And Kari (Skogland), our director, was amazing. It would be fun as hell to do,’ Mackie said.

Still, Mackie revealed it still hasn’t entirely sunk in for him yet that he is, in fact, the new Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

‘I don’t know what I expected, but it’s definitely not what I thought it would be,’ Mackie said.

‘I guess I foresaw something that was much more celebratory than just being “Anthony with a new Twitter account,”‘ Mackie joked.

‘”It’s the same people I’ve been working with on these movies for eight years now. So to go from my first day to now becoming Cap with the same people was really special. Everybody shared in it, from the props team to wardrobe, from the camera department to the people in the office. It was really a collective effort,’ he added.
