Former Bachelor Matt Agnew reveals the REAL reason he stepped away from the spotlight after his shock split with Chelsie McLeod

Former Bachelor Dr Matt Agnew kept a low profile in the media following his split from Chelsie McLeod after just two months together, in November 2019.

And on Saturday, the 33-year-old revealed his reason for leaving the spotlight soon after announcing the end of the short-lived romance.

He told the Herald Sun that his silence was a calculated move on his part to help ‘put himself back together’ after his TV stint.

‘I did not come out of both the show and the relationship in great shape and I needed time with my close friends and family to pick myself up and put myself back together, really,’ he said.

The handsome astrophysicist said that while he has no regrets about taking part in the dating show and not finding lasting love, it has given him an opportunity.

‘It has certainly given me the opportunity to continue to talk about science to a broad audience which is something I am really passionate about.’

Matt made a brief return to the spotlight back in February to present his science show Dr Matt Agnew’s Guide to Life Beyond Earth at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, about the about the solar system.

Earlier this year, Matt revealed he was so anxious about announcing the split on Instagram that he asked a friend to post it for him.

He told The Gist podcast: ‘I was dreading it. I put together my words and they were something I gave a lot of thought to to make sure I was conveying my feelings correctly.’

‘I actually got a friend to post it because I couldn’t do it myself,’ he admitted.

The scientist revealed that his friend also handled his Instagram for a long time after the break-up announcement was made back in December.

He said: ‘I didn’t want to deal with comments, I didn’t want to deal with DMs and all that, and I’m really glad I did.’

‘Everyone says don’t read it (the comments), and you can do it 99 per cent of the time, but you have that one percent, that one moment of weakness and you read something and you completely capitulate.’

In the 2019 Bachelor finale, Matt professed his love for chemical engineer Chelsie McLeod in South Africa.

But their relationship didn’t last. The couple confirmed their split two months after the finale airdate, and Chelsie later hinted it wasn’t her decision to end things.
