  • Coastguards posted picture online and urged the man to ‘stay away’ from coast
  • Social media users have criticised the pair for being reckless at the beauty spot

A beachgoer has been urged to ‘stay away’ from the coast after he appeared to propose to his partner on an unstable cliff just after a huge boulder fell nearby.

Coastguards snapped the man down on one knee and appearing to look up at another individual on the crumbly sandstone cliffs of Orcombe Point in Exmouth, Devon.

It was posted on July 25 by Exmouth’s Rescue Team, who said: ‘Are you foolish enough to take the risk? He clearly was! Don’t become a statistic. Stay away from unstable cliffs!’

The happy couple were snapped appearing to share a special moment at Orcombe Point in Exmouth, Devon. Coastguards have urged them to stay away from the area

Social media users have slammed the man’s actions as equivalent to ‘setting up camp directly below a “Danger – Falling Rocks” sign’.

Another said they had seen a couple on this cliff before, with a man walking to the edge and stamping to find out how stable the cliff was.

Just seven days before the alleged romantic liaison, a rock several feet wide crashed off the cliff-face and onto a footbridge below at the favoured seaside spot.

In 2018, a 16-year-old girl was found at the foot of the cliffs in ‘extreme agony’ after she fell backwards off the rockface while having a picnic with friends.

Orcombe Point is the most westerly point of the Jurassic Coast and a World Heritage Site.
