Behind the scenes Polaroids of Jack Nicholson as the Joker going to auction

Behind the scenes photos from the production of Tim Burton’s Batman movie have emerged for sale for £15,000.

The 277 Polaroid photos were used to ensure continuity by the 1989 film’s costume designer.

They include candid snaps of Jack Nicholson during downtime on set while dressed and made up as The Joker.

The legendary actor is seen relaxing on a yellow sofa and grinning in between takes while his downed character lies spreadeagled on the floor.

Michael Keaton, who played Batman, is depicted performing a corny pose for the camera while dressed in a smart suit in the role of Bruce Wayne.

There is another photo of him wearing a dressing gown which is open at the front exposing his bare torso and one of him smiling for the camera in his Batman costume.

The American actress Jerry Hall, who played The Joker’s mistress Alicia Hunt, is depicted offering a catwalk-style pose for the photographer.

Beside the images that are presented in a red binder are detailed breakdown sheets outlining exactly when each costume appears in the film.

They list the actor, character name, scene number, shooting dates on which the costume was worn, and a brief costume description.

The lower half of the sheets feature handwritten notes on the outfits taking in colours, embellishments and accessories.

The ‘continuity binder’ was used as a detailed reference to assist the Bob Ringwood, the film’s costume designer.

Separated revised script pages feature throughout and have been placed with their corresponding costume breakdown sheets.

The paperwork has belonged to a crew member since the film’s release in 1989.

It remains in good condition although there are minor signs of wear and tear. The lot has been consigned with auctioneers Prop Store.

A spokesman for the London auction house said: ‘This is the costume continuity binder from the production of Tim Burton’s superhero film Batman.

‘It was used as a detailed reference to assist the wardrobe department on set, with this folder used by Bob Ringwood, who was nominated for an Academy Award.

‘The folder consists primarily of costume breakdown sheets, which display the actor, character name, scene number, shooting dates on which the costume was worn, and a brief costume description.

‘The lower half of the sheets feature a list of different garments, with handwritten notes detailing aspects of the outfits, such as colours, embellishments and accessories.

‘The paperwork displays signs of production use, including minor edge wear and dirt marks, and several of the pages have become stuck together over time.

‘Due to the depth and breadth of its content, bidders are encouraged to enquire for further details.’

The book measures 13ins by 12ins by 4ins and is being sold without copyright.

The sale takes place on December 1.
