Billie Piper reveals she gets emotional over the stress of being a successful working mother

Billie Piper has detailed the struggles of motherhood and revealed she cried at night due to the stress of being a successful working mother.

The actress, 38, spoke candidly to Fearne Cotton on the Happy Place podcast earlier this week where she made the confessions about her home life.

She said that ‘striking a balance’ between working and raising children is ‘unachievable’ which causes her to break down.

Billie has sons Winston, 12, and Eugene, nine, with ex Laurence Fox and two-year-old daughter Tallulah with singer Johnny Lloyd.

Billie became Rose Tyler – one of Doctor Who’s companions – after the show was resurrected in 2005, following 16 years off air.

As well as Doctor Who, her dazzling acting career, which came after her teen stint in the music business, included playing Belle in Secret Diary of a Call Girl and recently acting as the titular character in I Hate Suzie.

Following on from her body of work, Billie has now reflected on her work life balance and the troubles she faces emotionally.

She said: ‘This idea of striking a balance is unachievable. When I am at work all day long that shows in my kids, or in my relationship with my partner…

‘If I’m not at work, it shows in me. I cry at the end of every day and spend an hour in bed saying, “I’ll be better tomorrow, I swear”. I’m going to read my parenting manual tonight and everything will be better.’

Billie added that her mum, Mandy, remarked it was easier back in her day, as there was less judgement from other parents when raising children.

She said: ‘There was a simplicity to it then.’

The mother-of-three recently told how she battled through similar mental health issues to Britney Spears.

Britney, 39, famously suffered a public breakdown in 2008 after checking out of rehab, which saw her shave her head and attack paparazzi with an umbrella.

After shooting to fame as a popstar aged 15, Billie recalled how working 18-hour days and having a ‘lack of control’ over everything had a very ‘negative impact’ on her life.

Looking back on her early years, Billie told how working relentlessly to become a music star took a toll on her mental health and eventually led to an eating disorder.

She explained: ‘I don’t know anyone who worked as hard as I did at 15.

‘It was a combination of burnout, the trauma of becoming really famous, being disconnected with my family, a lack of control in my life – hence the eating disorder.’

She went on: ‘I also felt I was a teenager and changing emotionally and psychologically so much. When I think of the life I lived as a child, with an 18-hour working day and never seeing my family, I see how it negatively impacted my life.’

At just 15, Billie became the youngest female artist to bag a number one on the UK singles chart with her debut track Because We Want To.
