  • The actor looked round the kitchen before he stopped to lift up the counter
  • And social media users were quick to comment on the ‘hidden escape route’

The layout of a London flat has left viewers scratching their heads after discovering the backdoor is only accessible beneath the kitchen cupboards.

Actor Jamie Wilkes, who recently starred in His Dark Materials, took to Twitter to share the bizarre scene after going house-hunting in the capital.

The clip showed Jamie scanning the traditional-looking kitchen before he stopped to lift up one of the counters, which revealed the staircase of a ‘hidden escape route’.

Social media users were quick to comment on the unusual findings but were left divided as to whether it was ‘super creepy or super cool’.

Jamie uploaded the video, which has since been liked more than 322,000 times, alongside a caption that read: ‘Viewed a flat today and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to stop thinking about the back door…’

The revelation sparked curiosity among Twitter users as many scrambled to heap on the praise for the nifty exit route.

One wrote: ‘I LOVE IT!!! If I was a kid, and that was my kitchen, I would be living the dream.’

Another added: ‘Omg what?! That is so cool!! RIP to anything left on the bench if someone comes up those stairs.’

But he soon found the backdoor was only accessible via a staircase hidden beneath the kitchen cupboards

And a third social media user wrote: ‘You can fit THE ENTIRE OUTSIDE under your counters. This place is magic.’

But the quirky design feature was not for everyone as it seemed others would take a little more convincing.

One wrote: ‘I’m sure it’s not fire safe to disguise an emergency exit from your property.’

Another added: ‘God I’ve seen some weird flats but thats bizarre. Scary and bizarre.’

And a third commented: ‘Imaging having to move the toaster, the air fryer, and the blender just to get out the back door…’

Jamie’s discovery prompted a whole host of others into sharing their experiences of design faux pas.

One user, who had a similar set-up to Jamie, uploaded a video showing him opening one of the kitchen cupboards and wrote: ‘Here’s the entrance to my cellar.’

Someone else commented: ‘Was this in Walthamstow by any chance? I viewed a flat there once that had this but through the bathroom.

‘I’m so desensitised to London property that I thought it was mostly normal.’

And another added: ‘Our bedroom is hidden behind the bookshelves in the living room. Kids think it is super cool like a Scooby-Do episode. Adults on the other hand think it is a bit weird.’
