Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker hints at a NEW instalment of his dystopian TV show

Death To 2020! Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker hints at a NEW instalment of his dystopian TV show inspired by the coronavirus crisis

After a year blighted by the inexorable spread of a deadly, unseen virus it would be churlish not to compare the unprecedented events of 2020 with something akin to Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series, Black Mirror.

And with so much source material to play with, Brooker himself has hinted that the show is poised to return with a new episode inspired by the cataclysmic social, medical, political and economical changes that have taken place since normal life effectively ground to a halt in March.

Taking to Twitter on Friday, the 49-year old screenwriter teased at a forthcoming new addition to the Black Mirror universe, appropriately titled Death To 2020.

Exciting: Charlie Brooker has hinted that Black Mirror will return with a new episode entitled Death To 2020, inspired by the cataclysmic changes that have taken place since normal life effectively ground to a halt in March

Underscored by an urgent, anxious sounding string section the short clip is displayed in a series of fast moving juxtapositions with the message: ‘Even the creators of Black Mirror couldn’t make this year up, but they do have something to add.’

While a release date is yet to be formally announced, the potential episode – or indeed episodes – will be available to stream on Netflix.

With little known about Death To 2020, it’s also likely that it could be a new documentary narrated by Brooker – who has done similar work with irreverent review show Screenwipe – as he analyses the events of the last year.

The surprise news was met with inevitable excitement from fans, with filmmaker Duncan Jones – the son of late music legend David Bowie – tweeting: ‘CHARLIE!!! YES!!’

Not without a hint of sarcasm, a second follower commented: ‘He would need to do 100’s of shows to wade through the s***.’

While a third added: ‘I’m wondering if this is going to be a total inversion of Black Mirror. The reality of this year is already so Black Mirror perhaps this will be a what-if scenario where we have a year where everything is great.’

Latest addition: This will be the first Black Mirror release since season five of the show launches on Netflix in June 2019
