Bono, Halsey and Pharrell Williams have signed on to join the cast of Sing 2

Bono, Halsey and Pharrell Williams have signed on to join the cast of the upcoming animated musical comedy Sing 2

It looks like the upcoming sequel to 2016’s Sing is adding more musical talent to its already impressive cast.

On Monday, it was announced that singers Bono, Pharrell Williams and Halsey had all joined the voice cast of Sing 2.

The musicians are set to star alongside returning cast members Matthew McConaughey, Scarlett Johansson, Reese Witherspoon and Nick Kroll.

Big names added: Bono, Halsey, and Pharrell Williams have all been added to the cast of the upcoming musical film Sing 2; the U2 singer is seen in 2018

Also set to join the impressive voice cast lineup are Chelsea Peretti, Letitia Wright, Bobby Cannavale and Eric Andre.

The U2 frontman is slated to portray Clay Calloway, a reclusive lion and rock star whom the main cast attempts to bring out of retirement in order to bolster the image of their stage show in the eyes of wolf mogul Jimmy Crystal, played by Cannavale.

The film will see Bono in his voice acting debut, after U2’s songs had previously been used in numerous films and television shows.

Halsey will voice Crystal’s teenage daughter Porsche, while Williams is set to play Alfonso, a friendly elephant ice cream truck owner who becomes the first crush of fellow elephant Meena, played by Tori Kelly.

Not the first time: New cast member Halsey previously took on a voice acting role as Wonder Woman in 2018's Teen Titans Go! To the Movies; she is seen in January

The feature will mark Williams’ second collaboration with Illumination, after he penned the Grammy-winning hit song Happy for the second Despicable Me movie.

Peretti has been cast as Crystal’s assistant and talent scout, while Andre will play a conceited yak.

The original film’s director and writers Garth Jennings is returning in the same capacities for the upcoming sequel.

Meledandri gave a statement to Deadline regarding Sing 2’s themes and what the producers wanted the film’s audiences to take away from watching the picture.

‘The film is a musical celebration of the unrelenting pursuit of one’s dreams, no matter how large the challenges that stand in your way. At its core this movie speaks to the power of optimism and belief,’ he said.

The upcoming film was originally set to be released on Christmas of this year before being pushed back in April of 2019.

A year afterwards, Sing 2 was given a release date of December 22, 2021, after its original July 2 debut was taken over by Minions: The Rise Of Gru, also produced by Illumination.
