British girl, two, drowns in Algarve swimming pool

  • Two-year-old girl was at home with her mother on Wednesday evening when she got into the pool area unnoticed and fell into the water
  • Father arrived home to find her unconscious, and rushed her to medical centre
  • But medics were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead around 7pm
  • Police are investigating but say all evidence points to it being a tragic accident

A two-year-old British girl has died after drowning in a swimming pool at her family home in the Algarve.

Police believe the girl was at home with her mother on Wednesday evening in the village of Tunes, near the resort town of Albufeira, when she got into the pool area unnoticed and fell into the water.

As the girl’s father arrived home he noticed her floating unconscious in the water and rushed her to a local medical centre where she was pronounced dead.

Police are today questioning the parents as part of a routine investigation, but say all information received so far points to it being a tragic accident.

The tragedy unfolded at a house in the small village of Tunes, which is part of the municipality of Silves.

‘The GNR’s criminal investigators found no evidence of any crime but officers are questioning the couple again today to rule out any foul play,’ a well-placed source said today.

‘It appears the girl’s father found her body floating in the water when he got home. He went straight to the health centre in Albufeira where she was pronounced dead.

‘The information officers have at this stage is that the girl’s mother was in the house doing stuff at home but hadn’t realised the girl had either got into the pool or fallen into the water.’

Another source confirmed the couple were expats. It is not yet clear how long they had been living in Portugal and how old they are.

Tunes has around 2,000 inhabitants. It is around 18 miles east of the town of Silves.

Many people who live there have traditionally worked in nearby tourist centres such as Albufeira.

Despite being a small village, it has a train station which is an important national transport hub.

The family involved is believed to be an expat family.

In July 2018 a British youngster drowned in an Algarve swimming pool.

The child was pronounced dead after being pulled out of the water at a villa on a resort known as the Amendoeira resort near the historic town of Silves.

Emergency responders raced to the scene and practiced CPR on the boy, who had been playing with two brothers, but were unable to save his life.

One police source said the boy was with two brothers and their parents had discovered him when he was already unconscious.
