A million Britons have food in their ice boxes that has been in there since 2015 or longer, according to a report.

A survey of UK adults found five per cent admitting to items frozen at least five years ago.

One in seven had food more than two years old, with ready meals the most popular choices.

One confessed there was a box in their freezer containing ‘an unknown, disgusting-looking stew I will never eat’.

Lorraine Taylor, of insurer Prominence Support which carried out the survey, said: ‘It’s reasonable to assume once we freeze food it is fine to eat for years. 

‘But, that’s not the case. While it might be safe to eat years later, it won’t necessarily look or taste nice.’
