Coronation Street’s Tanisha Gorey says Asha Alahan’s sexting plot is educational for young people

Her character Asha Alahan is currently enduring a horrific sexting ordeal after a racy video she sent to her boyfriend was leaked online.

And Coronation Street actress Tanisha Gorey revealed that the storyline could be educational for young people as more people tune into the soap amid the coronavirus lockdown. 

Tanisha, 17, also revealed that she couldn’t wait to get back to filming on the cobbles after production was halted amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Appearing on Thursday’s Lorraine via video link, the actress discussed her character’s horrifying new storyline and revealed it’s a topic that needs to be discussed.

16-year-old Asha’s world recently turned upside down after a sexy video she sent to boyfriend Corey Brent began circulating online, leaving her humiliated in front of he friends and school peers.

Her embarrassment grew even more recently as her dad Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) learned what she had done and told her that her late mother Sunita would be ashamed of her.

Discussing the plot with Lorraine, 60, Tanisha said: ‘It’s something that does need to be looked at, especially with our audience as well, obviously it’s changed during what we’re all going through. 

‘So it definitely is a great time to get it out there, getting everyone learning about it and knowing more about it.’

As Lorraine spoke about the ensuing drama that will no doubt follow on from the explicit video scandal and Dev’s determination to involve the police, Tanisha insisted that it was the last thing her character wants.

She said: ‘She definitely doesn’t [want police involvement] now, she’s one of those characters where something happens and she wants it to roll over, she wants the ground to swallow her up.

‘She wants to completely forget about it and get on with her life.’

She continued: ‘I mean Asha has gone through so much already and she already feels like she doesn’t have people, she doesn’t have a mother and the people she had in her life she really felt like she could trust. I mean Kelly ushered Amy away from Asha already.’

Meanwhile, Tanisha, who is currently isolating with her grandparents, revealed she misses her cast mates and is ‘excited’ to get back on set once lockdown is over.’ 

The Oldham born star said: ‘I think what I miss most is, where we all just come together and are just sat together because we have the most random conversations a day.

‘I miss going out, and having some really close friends there, but I am really excited to get back.’ 

Of her friendship with co-star Elle Mulvaney who plays Amy Barlow, she added: ‘We are really really close. We talk all the time, and she’s probably my best friend there.’

She went on: ‘I’m isolating with my nan and grandad, I’m a granddad’s girl so growing up I have constantly been here. And when you grow up you start to distance, so it’s good spending a few weeks with them.

‘Honestly I feel like learn a lot of things from this, but I’m excited to get back.’

Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30 on ITV.
