Daryl Braithwaite reveals his new single Love Songs was originally meant for US singer Pink – as he explains the surprising reason he ended up singing it

Australian music legend Daryl Braithwaite has admitted that his new single Love Songs was originally meant for US singer Pink.

Speaking to Adelaide Now on Saturday, the 71-year-old rocker explained that he initially passed on the song and offered it to Pink’s manager Roger Davies for consideration, but the deal never went through.

‘I was sending it on as a favour to someone so I do have to thank Roger for passing on it and thinking it wouldn’t be suitable for Alecia [Pink] because she is on a break from recording,’ he revealed.

Roger – who previously managed the band Sherbet – suggested that Love Songs would actually be a perfect tune for Daryl to sing.

Love Songs is Daryl’s first release since his 2017 mini-album Forever The Tourist.

The song was written by Australian songwriter Michael Fatkin and Los Angeles-based writers Rozzi Crane and Charlie Synder.

Back in February, Daryl delighted fans when he performed his track The Horses at bushfire charity concert, Fire Fight 2020

The sellout crowd joined in on the chorus, which has since become Australia’s unofficial national anthem.

The singer was inducted into the ARIA Awards Hall Of Fame in 2017.

Accepting the accolade, the iconic star recalled how he gave up singing in the mid-1980s after Sherbet disbanded and he became unemployed.

The One Summer singer resorted to seeking government support while looking for a job.

‘I had to go on the dole,’ Daryl said. ‘After about six weeks they found me a job at Sunbury council working on the roads for 10 weeks.’

But Daryl soon found himself returning to singing because he couldn’t live without it.

‘If you are a young person looking to play music and you have the passion, please listen to the voice inside your head and take the chance on it, because it is really worth it,’ he said.
