‘Both mum and I live to tell the tale’: Delta Goodrem reveals the harrowing family story behind her new song Crash
Delta Goodrem has proven time and again that she is a strong and resilient woman in both her personal and professional life.
And in an excerpt from her upcoming book Bridge Over Troubled Dreams, published in Who magazine on Thursday, she shared the harrowing story behind her new song Crash, from her sixth studio album.
The 36-year-old revealed that in 1984 her mother, Lea, was seven months pregnant with her when she was involved in a serious car crash during a storm.

Lea was rushed to hospital for surgery, and gave birth to Delta two months before she was due.
The Born to Try singer spent the first weeks of her life in the intensive care unit.
‘It was touch and go for both of us and my mum and I barely even saw each other during that first little while,’ Delta writes in her book.
‘By some miracle – and with that fighter’s spirit – both mum and I live to tell the tale.’

Delta’s father, Denis, celebrated his wife and daughter’s safe return home by buying a baby grand piano for their house – which Delta ended up learning to play on.
The songstress believes something spiritual happened in the moment her mother was involved in the traffic accident.
She writes: ‘Like the song says we had fighter in the front seat and hope by our side… I came into the world literally fighting which is a strange concept but a theme that seems to have found its way back to me again and again.’
Delta became a household name when she joined long-running soap Neighbours in 2002 and released her debut album, Innocent Eyes, in 2003.

She was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma that same year, but was able to make a full recovery.
During her twenties, she experienced multiple relationship breakdowns in the public eye with the likes of tennis player Mark Philippoussis, Westlife star Brian McFadden and musician Nick Jonas.
She is now dating guitarist Matthew Copley.
