Dev Patel embarks on an epic quest in new trailer for The Green Knight

A new trailer for The Green Knight was released on Tuesday, revealing the film will be released in cinemas on July 30.

The medieval fantasy sees Dev Patel transform into Sir Gawain who embarks on an epic quest in David Lowery’s retelling of 14th century English chivalric romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

On his journey, the knight of King Arthur’s Round Table comes across giants and talking animals as he seeks out the eponymous dryad.

Exciting: Dev Patel embarked on a quest as a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table and faces a dryad, talking animals and giants in the trailer for The Green Knight, released on Tuesday

The trailer opens with Sean Harris’ King Arthur addressing his knights, asking them in a gravelly tone: ‘Friends, brothers and sisters. Who can regale and my queen with some myth, or tale?’

It is then the Green Knight, a woodland spirit decked in full armour, enters the chamber and challenges one of the King’s knights to ‘try to land a blow against me, indulge me in this game.’

Sir Gawain is the one to stand, leaping over the round table with sword in hand before swiftly beheading the creature.

But in a dark twist the dryad picks up his head from the floor and warns that in ‘one year hence’ they will meet again for him to take a return blow.

Almost a year later Sir Gawain visits with his king, who says he ‘must seek out’ the Green Knight, and he asks: ‘Was it not just a game?’ to which the royal responds ‘perhaps but it is not complete’.

And so Sir Gawain sets off, traversing forests and mountains to find The Green Knight, where he meets a talking fox.

The creature warns in an ominous tone: ‘You will find no mercy, no happy end.’

Stepping in his way, the fox warns that Sir Gawain’s ‘doom is at hand’ and this appears to be true as the knight strikes out with his stone axe.

He is also confronted by Barry Keoghan’s Scavenger, who steals Sir Gawain’s weapon and ties him up, saying: ‘You rest your bones, I’ll finish your quest for you.’

Sir Gawain appears to get free of the menace, though, as he is later seen climbing a mountain where he finds an army of giants walking through the foggy landscape.

Joel Edgerton also makes a brief appearance in the trailer as Lord Bertilak, and he asks Sir Gawain of his quest: ‘And what do you hope to gain, in facing all of this?’

The knight remains true to his king, as he responds: ‘Honour. That is why a knight does what he does.’

Teasing the second fight between Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the two come face-to-face in the closing moments of the trailer with the Dryad picking up his axe and asking the knight: ‘Are you ready?’

Alicia Vikander is also set to star in the film as Lady Bertilak, though she does not make an appearance in the trailer.

The Green Knight is set to be released in the United States on July 30, and in UK cinemas on August 6, 2021.
