Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze near the University of Bradford which witnesses claim has spread to neighbouring buildings.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said 18 engines are trying to put out a fire in a furniture factory adjoining a larger mill complex on Legrams Lane.

A number of residents from nearby flats have been evacuated and a cordon in the surrounding area has been put in place, the service said.

Residents in the Shearbridge area are advised to keep doors and windows closed after photos showed massive plumes of black smoke pillowing over the city.

It is not yet known if there have been any injuries.

Photos and video posted on social media today show enormous plumes of black smoke rising into the sky and billowing over the city. 

One eyewitness said multiple fire engines were on the scene after local residents were woken up to the blare of sirens at around 2.45am.

More pumps from out of the area were also said to be rushing to the scene. 

In a statement published to its website, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service urged people living nearby to shut their doors and windows.

The service said: ‘Firefighters continue to tackle the blaze in Legrams Lane, Bradford.

‘The fire is in a furniture factory adjoining a larger mill complex. The affected area of the building is approximately 100 metres by 20 metres.

‘Power to the building has been isolated as part of the firefighting operations and power in the local area may also be affected. We are working alongside partners from Northern Power to manage this.

‘We are also working alongside partners from Police, Ambulance, Bradford Council Emergency Planning team and Yorkshire Water.

‘A number of residents from a nearby flats have been evacuated.

‘Other local residents in the Shearbridge area are advised to keep doors and windows closed. The public is also asked to avoid the area if possible.

‘The incident remains 18 pumps in attendance. There is a cordon in the area and roads surrounding the building are affected.

‘Thank you to the public for your patience as we deal with this incident.’

Earlier it said: ‘Firefighters from across the Service are currently tackling a large building fire in the Legrams Lane area of Bradford. Our Control Room received the first emergency call to this incident at 02.44 hrs.

‘In total 18 pumps (fire engines) and four aerial appliances are currently in attendance at this incident and are working alongside emergency service partners.

‘Local residents living in the Shearbridge area of Bradford are advised to keep doors and windows closed due to large plumes of smoke in the area.’   

Sulayman Mahmood, a local resident on the scene, said the fire was ‘raging in an area of at least 12m long.’ He added that the fire seems ‘to be under control as they don’t seem to have started to evacuate other residents nearby.’
