Police have launched a hunt for a balaclava-clad ram-raiders armed with crowbars who smashed their way into a jewellers last night.

The criminals emptied Rajput Jewellers on Roundhay Road in Leeds, West Yorkshire, in a terrifying raid which left pedestrians fleeing for their live.

CCTV footage shows the gang repeatedly reversing a 4×4 vehicle into the shop front until the plate glass windows fall out.

Video filmed by an eyewitness shows the gang then entering the smoking building and emptying the jewellers of all their stock.

Armed police and the West Yorkshire force helicopter were scrambled but the gang escaped and are still at large. A cordon remains in place this morning.

An onlooker said: ‘I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. The robbers where focused on getting in and getting out of the jewellers as quickly as possible.

‘It is a miracle nobody was injured or killed by the manic driving.’
