Eddie Izzard worries the 21st Century could be the end of humanity but has hope it will be Earth’s ‘coming of age’… as Lorraine Kelly backs her to be the ‘first female world president’


Eddie Izzard has expressed her doubts about whether humanity will survive the 21st Century – but thinks it could be our ‘coming of age’.

Appearing on Wednesday’s edition of Lorraine, Eddie, 59, talked about her past forays into politics and her hopes to become a Member of Parliament.

‘I want to be an MP in the next election, I’d love to be an MP,’ she told Lorraine Kelly, who remarked that when she speaks to politicians she feels she is ‘not talking to a person’.

Defending those in politics, Eddie said: ‘I think they are, at their base, human beings, but you have to tow a party line. To try to be your own self and be on message is a tricky thing to do.

‘Some I agree with, some I don’t. Some [politicians’] characters are great. 

‘I want to go in and see what I can do. I don’t know what. But I can do more than nothing.’

She went on to talk about her views on humankind as an overall race, saying: ‘I believe in all human beings, I don’t believe in nationalism and separation. I believe in us as a continent, a world.

In response to this, Eddie replied: ‘I just want to be positive .’

She also discussed her running endeavors – having run a plethora or marathons, the latest being 31 marathons in 31 days in January 2021.

Explaining that she was able to adapt to running in later life because of giving up sports at school, she said: I stopped competitive sports at 12. I stopped playing football. So I think I was left fallow.

‘They say you can be over-trained when you’re younger. My body didn’t fall apart, it wasn’t even touched. I was saved by the fates for running in later years.’

He also suggest Lorraine run another marathon.

‘Lorraine you are an icon in the UK – the essence of you is you’re a human being – you you have held on to your human beingness. If you do it, you will inspire others.’
