Men and women have revealed the little things that get under their skin, including loud chewers, crumbs on a wooden floor and contaminating butter with a dirty knife.

The comment thread was started by Australian mother and blogger, Adele Barbaro, who said there are five things in particular which annoy her beyond belief.

‘My top five starts with people who chew with their mouth open,’ Adele, from Melbourne, posted on Instagram.

‘I can’t stand hearing their food sloshing around in their mouth. In fact, loud chewing in general. I can hear it from the other side of a restaurant.’

Adele said she ‘cannot concentrate’ on holding a conversation if she can hear chewing, as it infiltrates every part of her brain.

‘The second little thing is when Paul [her husband] scrunches the Weetbix bag, rather than sealing it with a clip or putting it in a container,’ Adele said.

She said she has been asking her partner to do this for a decade now, and has an irrational fear of cockroaches and ants, which she worries will get inside.

‘Thirdly, I hate when people hock back their gollies and you can see them swallow it,’ Adele said.

‘Omg. I gag. I can’t even. I look at them like I just smelt a fart. Blow your bloody nose,’ she added.

Her fourth gripe was something that struck a chord with many: when you are ‘patiently waiting’ for a car parking spot where someone has their reverse lights on.

‘But then they just get on their phone, leaving me just waiting… and waiting… and waiting,’ Adele said.

‘When they eventually back out, I give them a little friendly wave but really, I hope they get diarrhea on the way home.’

Adele’s final little thing that gets on her nerves is when she can feel crumbs underneath her feet at home.

‘I don’t wear shoes inside so it continually drives me bonkers,’ the mum said.

‘I vacuum all day, every day… and still…’

Others were quick to share their own ‘little things’ that get under their skin, with one woman saying it drives her mad when people contaminate the butter.

‘Can’t stand when people contaminate the butter and then leave it like that I’ve bought my own secret butter and hidden it so I always have clean butter,’ she wrote.

Others highlighted fork and knife scraping, as well as opening new packets of something before the old one is finished.

‘I hate adults who have bad teeth and enough money to fix them but don’t,’ one man wrote.

‘My partner eats yoghurt off an upside-down spoon and it drives me crazy,’ another added.

Sniffing, people who don’t let you exit a lift before they barge in and any kind of repetitive noise like tapping away on a table were all also popular choices.
