A former Married At First Sight star thinks the show’s participants may now be too savvy for reality TV.

Speaking on her Nova FM podcast, Finding a Unicorn, on Wednesday, Carly Bowyer claimed this year’s stars are too aware of the mechanics behind the show.

The 34-year-old appeared on the 2018 season of MAFS, and she branded this year’s show as ‘horrible’ and ‘painful to watch’.

‘I think people have wised up to them [the show’s producers],’ she claimed. 

‘I think people who are on the show now know what they need to do to get drama. I think it’s a little bit different.’

Carly claimed the people who appeared on her season lacked the self-awareness seen in many of the show’s recent participants.

‘When I was on the show, we had no idea what we were doing. We were so naive and stupid, so they were loving us,’ she explained. 

She added: ‘We were just puppets for them and they were the puppeteers.’

Carly was partnered with Justin Fischer on the hit show, but later broke up with him and took up with co-star Troy Delmege, before eventually splitting from him, too.

It’s not the first time she’s spoken out against MAFS, previously claiming the show’s resident ‘love experts’ rarely get it right.  

‘I would say don’t go on a reality show to find love, you’re probably not going to find it. It’s virtually impossible,’ she told The Daily Telegraph in February.

‘The couples know nothing about each other, they’re [matched] by experts who don’t know them either so it’s pretty bloody unlikely.’
