France’s coronavirus death toll has risen by 987 to to 13,832 but the number of patients being treated in intensive care fell for the third day in a row.
The latest figures have raised hopes that the nationwide lockdown is curbing the spread of the outbreak.
It comes as the French health ministry director Jerome Salomon said at a daily briefing: ‘We are confronting a massive and murderous epidemic, which has reached an unprecedented level.’

The number of people in intensive care units fell from 7,004 to 6,883 in 24 hours – down nearly two percent.
The number of people in hospital virtually stabilised at 31,320, up by just 53, according to ministry data.
Mr Salomon said that despite the glimmer of hope shown in the statistics new cases kept arriving at hospitals and the French people needed to remain vigilant.
