Grandfather, 72, is killed by ‘a man wielding a brick’ in ‘dispute over parking’ on cul-de-sac

Police have launched an investigation after a grandfather was killed by a man ‘wielding a brick’ following an early morning fight on a residential cul-de-sac.

Emergency services were called to Treviscoe Close, in Exhall, Warkwickshire, following reports of a disturbance at around 8.30am today.

The victim, 72, died as result of his injuries and another man and woman were treated and discharged on the scene following the mass brawl.

Neighbours alleged the pensioner was killed by a man wielding a brick in a dispute over parking on the cul-de-sac.

Locals claimed there had been an ongoing dispute between residents about cars blocking their driveways.

A 44-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and four other people remain in custody today following the disturbance, Warwickshire Police said.

One neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: ‘All I know is that it was a neighbour dispute.

‘That’s all that people have been saying around here this morning.

‘But it’s a nice street and is usually pretty quiet.

‘Me and my family just saw loads of emergency cars this morning quite early on and it was all a bit chaotic.’

Another resident added: ‘Me and the wife woke up early and around 8am the whole street was flooded with about eight police cars and two vans.

‘We looked out the window and there were so many people outside and then we heard the air ambulance overhead too.

‘I went outside and spoke to the police officers and they said it was a dispute amongst two men.

‘But there’s always issues on the street with the men over parking, they’re always arguing, it’s been going on for a while.’

Another man, who lives on the corner of Treviscoe Close, said: ‘I heard the sirens this morning and looked out my window.

‘The street was full of police cars but I’ve been out and spoken to some of my neighbours and they’ve said it was between two of the men in the close.

‘But there’s been arguing between an older man and a younger man before over a driveway and parking.

‘One of the men is bald and apparently a brick was involved and one of them had picked it up and used it.

‘There’s just been a lot said in that close about parking and cars before but I never knew someone would end up dead because of it.

‘That’s incredibly sad, especially if it’s the older man involved.’

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: ‘We were called at 8:50am to reports of a disturbance in Treviscoe Close, Exhall.

‘We sent the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, three land ambulances and a paramedic officer to the scene.

‘On arrival crews found a man in a critical condition.

‘Staff worked quickly to administer advanced life support to the patient on scene but sadly, despite the best efforts, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

‘A second man was treated for injuries not believed to be serious and he was discharged on scene.

‘A woman was also assessed and discharged on scene.’

Detective Inspector Jon Belcher said: ‘Next of kin has been informed and a full investigation is under way to establish the cause and circumstances that led to this loss of life.

‘Exhall residents should not be concerned by the large police presence today as a full forensic examination of the area and house-to-house inquiries are made to establish the facts.’

A Warwickshire Police spokesperson added: ‘A man has died following a report of a disturbance in Treviscoe Close, Exhall at around 8.45am today.

‘Enquiries are in there very early stages and there is a large police presence in the area.

‘Anyone witnesses, anyone with CCTV or dash cam footage or anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 quoting incident 71 of 20 May 2021.’
