This is the shocking moment a police officer appears to punch a suspect in the face as he resists arrest outside a pub.

Footage shows four officers from Hampshire Constabulary dealing with the man outside The Castle Inn in Newport on the Isle of Wight at 6.55pm yesterday.

They grapple with the man, who is in his 30s, on the floor as they try to detain him, shouting: ‘Do as you’re told, put your hands up.’

But the suspect continues to writhe and a policeman – who is bald and wears glasses – pulls back his left arm and appears to punch him.

The male lets out a cry of pain and is arrested before being later released without further action.

Hampshire Constabulary said its Professional Standards Department is investigating the incident.

It said in a statement: ‘We were called at 6.55pm last night (Tuesday 20 April) with reports of an assault at The Castle Inn Pub, Newport.

‘Officers attended and a man was arrested on St James Street in connection with this incident.

‘The man, aged in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and obstruct/resist a constable in the execution of duty.

‘He has since been released from custody with no further action in relation to these offences.

‘The man was also dealt with by means of community resolution in relation to the possession of cannabis.’
