Kacey Musgrave’s ex Ruston Kelly grins ear to ear as he celebrates two years of being ‘clean’

Country singer Ruston Kelly looked overjoyed on Tuesday as he marked two years of abstaining from drugs with a post shared on Instagram.

The 32-year-old songwriter beamed while raising two fingers in his photo as he shared his happy news with his 64K followers.

‘I’m two years clean today,’ he captioned the snap. ‘Happy and grateful and very very very lucky.’

Ruston looked as if he was relaxing at home while wearing a weathered gray graphic hoodie and a black toque.

He flashed a thumbs up in a short black and white wordless video posted to his Instagram Stories the same day.

‘I can’t even tell y’all how much your support has meant to me today. Thank you,’ he wrote, adding a flower bouquet emoji.

Among those wishing him well in the comments was his friend Olivia Munn, 40, with whom he hung out with on Sunday.

‘LFG,’ she wrote, a popular abbreviation for ‘Let’s f**king go.’

He expanded a bit on Tuesday morning over on Twitter, where he revealed his current drug-free stretch was the longest he had been clean since he was 16 years old.

‘Life hits waaaay different when you honor yourself and the gifts you’re lucky to have,’ he continued with a heart emoji.

The singer–songwriter also addressed the concern that many artists who use drugs have that their creative output will be diminished if they get clean.

‘One thing they don’t talk enough about when u get clean is how much your creativity improves,’ he began.

‘It seems the opposite at first but then u reach a point where ur like did I do drugs today cuz I can’t f***ing stop this pen.’

In September, Ruston shared more about his struggles with substance abuse in a profile for Esquire, which arrived as he released the music video for his single Under The Sun.

‘I don’t know if I overshare or not,’ he admitted while musing about his past drug use.

‘We’re all really just pushing through some sort of s**tstorm or living through the tornado, hoping to catch a safe ground in the eye.’

Part of what he attributed his history of drug abuse to was his poor self-control.

‘I’ve always had an issue with self-control in my life. I’ve been emotionally reckless at times and I’ve definitely abused myself with copious amounts of drugs and illicit materials and doing crazy things, and being wild without purpose and that is dangerous,’ he said, though he admitted that his behavior could also be ‘creatively fueling.’

Ruston’s second album, Shape & Destroy, which was released in August, marked the first time he had been completely clean while making music in a studio.

The interview also touched on his recent divorce from fellow country singer–songwriter Kacey Musgraves.

The two filed for divorce in July, and it was reported in September that they were awaiting finalization of the divorce by a judge after coming to an agreement on the final terms.

His album Shape & Destroy was recorded prior to their divorce, and Kacey’s voice backed him on multiple tracks, though he was still happy to have her presence felt on the record.

‘I mean I think it’s f**king wonderful,’ he said of their collaboration.

‘I think you get lucky if you know, you meet someone in your life that creates this sense of love for yourself and then turn to them along your path. And if you lead that, then you carry love with you.

‘That’s an amazingly lucky thing, and we have that, I have that, and that’s on this record. Her voice on this record is true to that to me,’ he explained.

On Sunday, Ruston enjoyed some socialization with actress Olivia Munn.

He and his friend Stephen Kinigopoulos visited her at home for a night of games and delicate French confections.

The Newsroom star had made some homemade macarons, so she had the two men put them to the test, with Ruston deciding they were ‘pretty f**cking good.’
