Kate Garraway put on a brave face as she stepped out alongside her son Billy, ten, in London on Tuesday evening.

The presenter, 53, appeared in high spirits following her emotional interview on GMB last Friday where she discussed fears her coronavirus-stricken husband Derek Draper could be comatose ‘forever.’

Kate’s friend Jane Moore revealed on Monday’s episode of Loose Women that Derek, 52, has now been ‘taken out of an induced coma’ but has yet to regain consciousness after he was rushed to hospital with coronavirus in March.

Despite all she has been through over the past few months, Kate kept her spirits high and looked radiant on her outing.

Kate’s friend Jane Moore recently sat down with Kate for an in-depth interview as the presenter discussed her husband’s ordeal, with Jane telling her co-stars on Monday’s Loose Women: ‘I honestly don’t know how she’s still standing.’

Derek was admitted to hospital on March 30, after struggling to breathe. Kate and their children Billy and Darcey, 14, also experienced mild coronavirus symptoms.

Joining her fellow panellists Andrea McLean, Denise Welch and Kelle Bryan on the show, Jane opened up on her chat with Kate, which took place at a safe distance for ‘a couple of hours’ in the star’s garden.

After Andrea sent their warm wishes to ‘our dear friend Kate Garraway and her husband Derek’, Jane then went on to commend Kate for showing great strength through this extremely difficult time in her life.

She said: ‘We’ve always known that Kate is strong and an amazing woman, but I honestly don’t know how she’s still standing.’

Discussing Derek’s battle, she continued: ‘Derek contracted coronavirus, he went to hospital, it looked initially like he might have a Boris Johnson experience, and come out largely unscathed, but it’s attacked all his vital organs.

‘He’s now COVID free, they’ve brought him out of the coma, they put him into an induced coma and brought him out of the coma, and he’s not regained consciousness yet.

‘So every day she is living with this awful uncertainty, she’s now talking about maybe our normality is that they are never gong to know if he will recover.’

Denise then went on to mention how Kate had gone into ‘journalistic mode’ as she began researching everything she could about the virus, while also taking care of her children William, 10, and Darcey, 14,

And while Kate has so much to cope with, Jane said that the star doesn’t begrudge anyone for relaxing during lockdown as she recalled Kate had said: ‘I will not judge anybody for wanting to lead a normal life.

‘But this virus, you don’t where this virus is going to go in your body, and what it’s going to do to you.’

Jane then opened up on how Kate has continued to deal with the tragic situation and how she’ll cope with what’s to come in the future.

In the interview with Jane, Kate said that doctors warned that Derek, who’s been in a coma for over 10 weeks, may be trapped in a coma ‘forever’.

Jane said of Kate: ‘And now she’s talking about how, maybe, it’s a new normality,

‘They’re preparing her, they’re saying maybe the new normality is that they’re never going to know whether he’ll recover.’

During her interview with Jane, Kate revealed her husband Derek may be trapped in a coma forever, with doctors warning her to prepare for the ‘second worst case scenario.’

Speaking in The Sun interview, Kate said she received a ‘terrible phone call’ two weeks ago from a senior doctor in the intensive care unit.

The presenter explained: ‘My first question, the one I always ask when the hospital call, was, ‘Is Derek still alive?’ and he said he was, but then asked me what my greatest fear was.

‘I said, “Derek dying” and he replied, “Well, now I think I have to give you a second worst case scenario, which is that he never changes from this, that he is locked in this for ever”.

‘He said, “I’m not telling you this to scare you. It’s because we don’t know if he can recover. We’ll only know over the coming weeks and months”, I threw up, there and then.’

Kate said she never imagined she would be told her husband may be trapped in a comatose permanently.

The Good Morning Britain host described it as the ‘second level of loss’, saying even if he doesn’t die, if he doesn’t wake up she will have lost him anyway.

The mother-of-two went on to explain how the virus has wreaked havoc with Derek’s body.

While he is able to breathe through a tracheotomy and the hope is everyday he will rely on the breathing support less, an MRI scan revealed he has holes in his heart, is on kidney dialysis, has a damaged liver and pancreas and is now diabetic, which he wasn’t before.

Kate said doctors had been trying to pull Derek out of his comatose state for the past three weeks, but he hasn’t managed to regain consciousness.

She went on to compare watching his battle to ‘like spinning plates’, adding that should Derek recover, they are looking at ‘months of rehabilitation’.

The television star admitted at times she feels paralysed with fear, but vows to stay strong for their two children.

Further discussing Derek’s progress, the star recalled shortly before her birthday on May 4th, Derek opened his eyes for the ‘first time’, with the presenter hopeful it was the beginning of his recovery.

But she was left crushed when his eyes closed once more, adding there’s ‘no sense’ on whether he could actually see anything.

Kate told how she FaceTimes Derek every night whenever staff can do so as she’s not permitted to be in the ward due to infection risk, but admitted that it was ‘agonising’ not knowing whether her being there in person would make a difference.

Recalling the start of Derek’s battle, Kate said how he was taken into surgery to have a ECMO machine (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) fitted in his leg as quickly as possible.

She said she was told there was a 50% risk of Derek’s heart stopping or of him having a stroke, but doctors warned that if the procedure didn’t take place, Derek was at risk of dying that very night.

She was later told that it did in fact stop, but doctors got it going again.

Amid Derek’s 10 week fight for his life, Kate had been tasked with making several ‘critical decisions’ on his behalf, with the star adding that it’s a ‘miracle’ she’s still functioning given the amount of times she’s been told Derek’s life was hanging in the balance.

She added that she soon went into ‘journalist mode’ in a bid to learn anything and everything about COVID-19, eventually accumulating stacks of box files crammed full of information.

In the interview, Kate also revealed that she and her children had received professional help to help them cope with the pressures involving Derek’s illness.

Kate told that although there were times she’s been ‘consumed by fear and sadness’, she uses mindful techniques taught to her to help ‘turn off the adrenalin.’

She continued: 'He said, 'I'm not telling you this to scare you. It's because we don't know if he can recover. We'll only know over the coming weeks and months', I threw up, there and then'
