Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo set to pen live-action Cinderella Evil Stepsisters movie for Disney

Bridesmaids writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo are set to team up with Disney for a live-action Cinderella Evil Stepsisters film. 

Per Deadline the untitled project is in early development, but will be a re-imagined take on the classic fairy tale as seen through the eyes of Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters.  

The ‘fairy tale musical comedy’ is being co-written by the Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar actresses who additionally received an Oscar nod for the Bridesmaids screenplay. 

The project will be produced by Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum from Gloria Sanchez productions. 

The film’s plot will center around stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine as they struggle to uphold their family legacy after Cinderella’s marriage. 

Though Wiig and Mumolo are known to make appearances in their co-written films, it is currently unknown if they will star in some capacity. 

Wiig first rose to fame as a player on Saturday Night Live, and Mumolo has enjoyed memorable appearances in comedies like Bad Moms and Judd Apatow’s This Is Forty.  

Deadline sources revealed that though beloved on-screen, the ladies plan to cast younger actresses in the role of the evil stepsisters. They may still make appearances as peripheral characters. 

The project comes as part of Disney’s push to thrust the villains from their beloved classics into the spotlight. 

Emma Stone will portray the role of 101 Dalmatians antagonist Cruella de Vil in Cruella, which is slated for release on May 28. 

Additionally live-action Beauty And The Beast stars Josh Gad and Luke Evans will reprise their roles as Gaston and LeFou, in a prequel series for Disney plus.
