Lady Gaga talks channeling her ‘painful’ past into her new album and suggests romantic splits were inspiration for her music

Lady Gaga is turning the painful memories of her past into empowering dance tracks for her upcoming album, Chromatic.

The pop star, 34, suggested her own romantic break-ups were the inspiration behind her new music, and hoped the ordeals she went through would help others going through difficult times.

In a teaser for her upcoming Beats 1 interview with Zane Lowe, a pink-haired Gaga reflected on the process of transforming her memories into healing music.

‘I don’t have to feel pain about it anymore’: Lady Gaga is turning the painful memories of her past into empowering dance tracks for her upcoming album, Chromatic

Asked by Zane what brought her back to the studio, Gaga replied, ‘The sound, the music, being myself. How can I take something that’s extremely painful for me and find the one piece of it that’s universally human and help somebody else? And then see what it sounds like.’

She then read aloud the lyrics to her new song Free Woman. ‘I’m not nothing without a steady hand, I’m not nothing unless I know I can. I’m still something if I don’t got a man, I’m a free woman.’

The lyrics told the story of a woman finding empowerment, despite her relationship status.

Zane was blown away. ‘This album is a reclaiming of the dance floor,’ he remarked.

Gaga has been through her fair share of splits over the years, having ended engagements to actor Taylor Kinney and talent agent Christian Carino.

She is currently dating CEO Michael Polansky.

Chromatic, Gaga’s sixth studio album, was originally supposed to be released on April 10, but was pushed back to May 29 as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Gaga broke the bad news on Instagram, revealing it didn’t feel ‘right’ for her to release the album amid the current circumstances.

‘This is such a hectic and scary time for all of us, and while I believe art is one of the strongest things we have to provide joy and healing to each other during times like this, it just doesn’t feel right to me to release this album with all that is going on during this global pandemic,’ she wrote.
