She’s the iconic English chef whose beloved around the world.

So it was no surprise that viewers went wild when Nigella Lawson appeared on Sunday’s MasterChef Australia, via a life-size LED screen ‘hologram’ due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

While the 61-year-old appeared on the show to challenge the contestants, viewers were left mesmerised by her soothing voice and her ‘delicious’ delivery of instructions – even over a live stream from London.

‘Can @Nigella_Lawson narrate my life though. She makes everything sound delicious,’ one viewer wrote, while another added: ‘#masterchefau re-awakens my crush on nigella lawson every single year.’

Trent Vu, who was the first to be eliminated from the show, cheekily wrote: ‘I’d 100% go straight for Nigella #MasterChefAU.’

‘God I love Nigella Lawson as a cook, writer and lover of food. I would be utterly devastated to be a contestant this year and to miss meeting her in person. Queen,’ a fourth added.

‘Hologram Nigella is still hot,’ another viewer chimed in, while a sixth gushed: ‘Can I get a virtual @Nigella_Lawson in my kitchen please? Just applauding me exuberantly when I make spag bol?’

On Sunday’s The Project, judge Jock Zonfrillo revealed just how the life-size technology worked.

He said: ‘Because there’s no satellites or delay, she’s able to have a conversation with us and the contestants and answer questions as if she’s really there. It’s pretty cool.’

The five who identified the least – Conor Curran, Brent Draper, Maja Veit, Yoyo Yang and Tom Levick – then had to bake Nigella’s beloved toasted marshmallow and rhubarb cake from scratch.

The twist was that they would have to create the dish from Nigella’s description alone, or risk being eliminated from the competition. 

This year’s Superstars Week will also welcome a host of other internationally renown chefs, including Yotam Ottolenghi, Massimo Bottura and Clare Smyth.

Last year Nigella and Heston Blumenthal were forced to miss out on their scheduled appearances due to coronavirus travel restrictions and border closures.

Gordon Ramsay, Curtis Stone and pregnant popstar Katy Perry were able to film separate segments before Australia shut its borders in early 2020.
