  • Mother and child were pulled from the River Kennet in Newbury this afternoon
  • Emergency services rushed to the scene and condition of the pair is unknown

A mother and her three-year-old child were today rushed to hospital after falling into a canal in Berkshire.

Emergency crews scrambled to the scene near a police station in Newbury at around 2pm following reports the mother and child had plunged into the River Kennet.

The pair were recovered from the water and taken to hospital but there has been no update on their condition.

Thames Valley Police were in attendance at the scene, where the River Kennet joins the Avon Canal near the A339 Newbury Ring Road, alongside paramedics and fire crews.

A major rescue operation was launched, but thankfully the mother and her three-year-old were quickly pulled out of the water.  

Officers remain at the scene today and members of the public have been being urged to avoid the area.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said; ‘Thames Valley Police officers were called at about 2pm today following reports that a woman and a three-year-old child had fallen into the canal near Ash Bridge, close to the A339, Newbury.
