Normal People could RETURN for series two as BBC bosses are desperate to bring back the show

It has won over audiences across the globe thanks to it’s breathtakingly beautiful performances and practically-perfect screen adaptation.

And now BBC bosses are reportedly ‘desperate’ to bring back characters Connell Waldron and Marianne Sheridan for a second season of Normal People.

The show, which has been streamed more than 16 million times, is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Irish writer Sally Rooney, 29.

Now, insiders say they have begun discussions with Sally about bringing back lovers Marianne and Connell, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, 21, and Paul Mescal, 24.

A source revealed to The Mirror that they are keen to ‘strike while the iron is hot,’ provided they can get the talented author on board.

They revealed: ‘The BBC are desperate to get going on series two. The viewing numbers are huge and they want more of the same.

‘They want to strike while the iron is hot and get working on the series as soon as possible. Their hope is to roll out the series in a similar time frame to Killing Eve. But it all depends on if they can get Sally Rooney on board.’

MailOnline has reached out to the BBC for comment.

Previously, the show’s executive producer has said he would like to revisit the young lovers ten years down the line.

Director Lenny Abrahamson told Digital Spy: ‘I have a fantasy of doing a kind of 10-year… you know, seeing where they are in 10 years’ time sort of thing. It’d be good.’

Meanwhile, the BBC is adapting Sally Rooney’s debut novel Conversations with Friends as a television series.

The author’s second screen adaptation will use the same team as Normal People.

The 2017 novel follows college students Frances and Bobbi in Dublin as they forge a strange and unexpected connection with married couple Melissa and Nick.

Since the show aired, the leading actors have been hot on the promotion trail despite remaining at home in lockdown.

In their latest appearance, Paul revealed all about the Mescal family reaction to the very raunchy scenes: ‘My granny warned my great aunt that there were a lot of sexy bits and that when she felt those were about to happen she should go off and do something else…

‘In episode two when we started kissing she took the dog out…

‘But she underestimated the time it would take and as she came back in we were right in the throes of it all… I suggested that a good long chore or a couple of cups of tea would do the trick next time!’

As well as the ‘sexy scenes’, the duo discussed the fact the show has just reached the 30 million viewer mark, as Daisy said: ‘It’s hard to believe people like it when we’re sitting in our bedrooms. It’s surreal.’

Paul went on: ‘That’s not even a number I can compute. It sounds really good and brilliant but it’s not something either of us anticipated. It’s just been good news after good news. It’s crazy!’

Earlier in the week, the duo appeared on James Corden’s Late Late Show on Wednesday via live link from their homes for a little catch-up.

James, 41, said: ‘You have the most incredible chemistry together on the show. It’s all anyone is talking about…

‘I am going to play you a clip from a random TV show and you must recreate it with all of the lust and intoxicating desire as Connell and Marianne have for each other. Do you think that’s possible?’

‘Oh yeah,’ Daisy replied confidently, before the duo sent fans wild with the game.
