Oscars 2021: Emerald Fennell shows off baby bump in billowing gown as she walks the pink carpet

Emerald Fennell debuted her baby bump as she walked the red carpet for the 93rd Academy Awards at Union Station in Los Angeles on Sunday.

The actress, 35, looked radiant in a green and pink billowing Gucci gown as she attended the socially-distanced Oscars ceremony, which saw her bag the Best Original Screenplay award for Promising Young Woman.

Emerald is expecting her second child with partner Chris Vernon, which comes after she directed her acclaimed film while she was seven months pregnant with her first child, and gave birth just weeks after production wrapped in 2019.

The Crown star looked the picture of elegance in the summery, ruffled number as she gently cradled her bump while posing for snaps.

Allowing her flowing gown to do the talking, Emerald swept her blonde locks into a simple sleek style, while she highlighted her features with a sweep of dewy make-up including bold purple eyeshadow.

The mum-to-be accessorised her look with silver earrings and a selection of silver and gold rings.

MailOnline have contacted representatives of Emerald for comment.

Emerald later picked up the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, becoming the first woman to in the award in 13 years.

She didn’t prepare a speech for the win, but instead chatted about the wight and temperature of the Oscar, while she also thanked the film’s star Carey Mulligan.

The nominee was earlier seen enjoying a tub of hot tub as she filmed a humorous video for the Academy’s official Instagram page in their Movie Palace.

The beauty appeared to be having a grand time as she munched on the cinema snack, before making off with two helpings.

Emerald welcomed her first child with director partner Chris in 2019, with the tot’s arrival first revealed when she was pictured out and about with the newborn.

The Call The Midwife star had just wrapped filming on Promising Young Woman at the time, and revealed last month she was heavily pregnant during much of the film’s production, and gave birth three weeks after filming wrapped.

She told People: ‘I was so pregnant and I think that really helped because in general, I care deeply, pathetically what people think about me.

‘I just chose the worst possible career in every way for that personality trait. The idea of people not liking me and thinking I’m difficult, all those things, is just dreadful to me.’

She went on: ‘But luckily, when you’re carting around a massive baby and you’re about to give birth, you don’t have the time to be anxious. I was like a literal ticking time bomb, which I think gave me this weird power for myself.’

Promising Young Woman is a revenge thriller that follows the story of Carey Mulligan’s character Cassie, a barista who feels unfulfilled in her life.

The film has so far had huge success this awards season, bagging two gongs at the WGA awards and a further two at this month’s BAFTA Film Awards.

First-time director Emerald became the first British woman to be nominated for Best Director with her film, Promising Young Woman, last month.

While the film landed five Academy Award nods; Best Picture, Best Film Editing, Best Director, as well as Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Mulligan, 35.

This year, the Oscars will adapt to the demands of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic for a socially distanced show that attempts to follow safety recommendations while steering clear of the virtual format other award shows have adopted.

To underscore the changes due to the pandemic, there will be no host, no audience, nor face masks for nominees attending the ceremony at Los Angeles’ Union Station -this year’s hub for a show usually broadcast from the Dolby Theatre.

Though attendees will have to mask up when not on stage. And there will be COVID-19 testing as well as temperature checks.

And guests – Brad Pitt, Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon and Zendaya have been secured – are not able to bring guests.

There will only be about 170 attendees in all, which is far less than the 3,000 that normally attended the Oscars pre pandemic.

In contrast with the largely virtual Golden Globes, Zoom boxes have been closed out — though numerous international hubs and satellite feeds will connect nominees unable to travel.

In order to cut down on risks, attendees have been asked to skip going to crowded places like gyms or restaurants for the 10 days prior to the ceremony.

The show appears to be trying to downplay the use of masks, as presenters won’t wear them when on camera, but they will be required to have them on during commercial breaks.
