‘You have to have a good sense of humour’: Patti Newton reveals the secrets to her 46-year marriage to TV legend Bert
They’ve been in ‘one another’s pockets for well over 50 years’ and will celebrate their 46th wedding anniversary on Monday.
And to honour the milestone, Patti Newton, 75, has revealed the secrets behind her long and happy marriage to television legend Bert, 82.
‘I think you have to have a good sense of humour, that’s something I do have, I’m always ribbing [Bert] about something,’ she told Now To Love on Wednesday.

She added that it was also very important to give each other space, noting that she and Bert ‘have different interests’.
‘Because we give one another space, and we’re both very loyal to one another, it worked out very well,’ said the grandmother of six.
Patti and Bert married on November 9, 1974, after he proposed to her while she was working as a resident compère and entertainer on the QE2 luxury liner.
‘Bert surprised me and got on board and asked me to marry him. A wonderful Australia Day and the best thing I ever did,’ she wrote Instagram in January 2017, reflecting on the day her husband popped the question.

Patti also revealed she would be lost if anything happened to Bert as the couple have ‘spent a lot of time together’ over the last five decades.
‘If anything happens to either of us, whichever one it is will find it very difficult because we’ve been in one another’s pockets for well over 50 years,’ she said.
It comes after Patti explained why she and Bert were able to see their grandchildren during COVID-19 lockdown in Melbourne, while many other grandparents were prevented from doing so.

The duo were granted ‘permission from the doctors to look after the little ones’ because their daughter, Lauren, was going through a difficult pregnancy.
Lauren was in hospital for three months, and the authorities ruled that Bert and Patti had an essential role to play in taking care of their grandkids.
They were quick to step in while their 40-year-old daughter prepared for and recovered from the premature delivery of her sixth child, Alby James.
