Patti Newton ‘urging’ son Matthew to return home from New York

Matthew Newton has been keeping a low profile since relocating to the U.S. in 2012.

And according to Monday’s Woman’s Day, the actor’s mother Patti Newton, 75, is urging him to return to Melbourne, in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Patti is said to be ‘worried sick’ for her 43-year-old son, who suffers from bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, and has a history with addiction.

An insider alleged that Patti has teamed up with Matthew’s mother-in-law Jennifer Cunningham to help get the star and his wife Catherine Schnedierman to Australia.

‘She (Jennifer) is advising them to go to Australia and has enlisted the help of Patti to get them there,’ the source claimed.

They went on to say that Patti is concerned for Matthew and Catherine, considering the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) in New York.

As of the evening of April 20, there are 764,265 confirmed cases of the virus in the United States, including 40,565 deaths.

In New York alone, there are 134,436 confirmed cases, including 10,022 deaths.

‘Outwardly, she (Patti) tells people she’s happy for Matthew to make his own decisions, but truthfully not a single day goes by where she isn’t worried sick for him, especially now,’ the source claimed.

Matthew has kept under the radar since relocating to the U.S. but is said to be keen to resurrect his Hollywood career, following a troubled past.

The Looking for Alibrandi star was forced to withdraw as director of film Eve in October 2018 after a social media backlash over his alleged history of assault.

This includes domestic violence allegations from two former girlfriends: Australian actresses Brooke Satchwell, 39, and Rachael Taylor, 35.

Matthew was also arrested twice in Miami, Florida, in 2012 – the first for trespassing and resisting officers, while a second incident saw him charged with battery and resisting arrest after he attacked a hotel receptionist.

Following the charges, Matthew checked into the Betty Ford Center in California for 90 days of alcohol and drug treatment.

Both matters were later dismissed under the conditions that Matthew completes community service and writes a letter of apology to the hotel clerk.

With Matthew on the road to recovery, a source alleged to Monday’s New Idea, that his father Bert Newton, 81, ‘couldn’t be happier’ that their family issues are ‘on the mend’.

The insider went on to say that Matthew ‘remains an unresolved part of the family’ and is ‘clean and sober’ after ‘years of personal issues that made headlines’.
