Paul Mescal starts day with London jog after Emmy nomination

Paul Mescal works up a sweat as he starts his day with a jog after Normal People star wins Best Actor nomination at the Primetime Emmys

He’ll be transported from London to Los Angeles, albeit via Zoom, after winning a surprise nomination at the forthcoming 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards.

But Paul Mescal pushed all thoughts of triumph at the annual ceremony to one side on Thursday morning as he ventured out for a jog in the English capital.

The Normal People star wore a pair of snug fitting shorts not unlike those favoured the show’s lovelorn protagonist Connell Waldren while getting his day off to a positive start.

Let’s go: Paul Mescal pushed all thoughts of triumph at the 72nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards to one side on Thursday morning as he ventured out for a jog in the English capital

Mescal, 24, added to his sporty look with a black Adidas T-shirt, while matching black running shoes rounded things off.

The actor was working up a sweat after being recognised for his portrayal of Trinity College student Connell in BBC Three’s acclaimed adaptation of Sally Rooney’s bestselling coming-of-age novel.

Mescal has been nominated in the category for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie, but he faces stiff competition from fellow nominees Jeremy Irons, High Jackman, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Pope.

However Daisy Edgar-Jones, Mescal’s troubled onscreen lover Marianne Sheridan, surprisingly missed out on a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.

Paul has since thanked Daisy, 22, for her work and championed her ‘extraordinary talent’ for the show’s success.

Sharing a picture of Connell in tears, the Irish star thanked Daisy, as well as Normal People director Lenny Abrahamson.

He wrote: ‘My actual face right now! Thank you to absolutely everyone at @ElementPictures, @Hulu and @BBCThree!

‘@lennyabrahamson I will never be able to thank you enough! @DaisyEdgarJones this only exists because of you and your extraordinary talent it’s as simple as that! Thank you all x.’

Mescal has also shared his disappointment for co-star Daisy being snubbed, he told Vulture: ‘If it was me I would have given her all the love in that category. I can’t speak highly enough of the work she did on the show.

‘I know there are extraordinary actresses nominated in that category, but I think Daisy’s work is just phenomenal in this.’

This year’s Primetime Emmy Awards will be conducted virtually as a consequence of the coronavirus pandemic, with guests participating from home  for the first time in the show’s history.
