Pete Evans shares concerns as shoppers buy ‘crap food’ amid coronavirus

Celebrity chef and television host Pete Evans has revealed his concern for shoppers amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on his Evolve podcast last week, the 47-year-old said he was shocked by the number of people filling up their trolleys with ‘crap food’ at a local supermarket.

‘I was at the supermarket the other day picking up meat and seafood, but I was looking at people’s trolleys and I was like, “they’re still filling up with crap food”,’ he remarked.

However, the cookbook author, known to many as ‘Paleo Pete’, went on to say that the global health crisis can be used as motivation for people to overhaul their diet.

‘But I dare say throughout this, there will be a conscious awakening into those pillars of health,’ he said.

‘We’re going to be in a situation where it’s like, “oh s**t maybe I should’ve looked after myself those last couple of years”, and maybe now is a really, really good time.’

Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness accompanied by fever, coughing, sore throat, shortness of breath and fatigue. It can produce pneumonia.

The spread of the disease, which began in Wuhan, China, has seen over 350,453 cases worldwide and more than 15,000 fatalities.

As of the evening of March 23, the total number of people diagnosed with the virus in Australia is 1,716 including seven deaths.

Meanwhile, Pete’s concern comes after he swiped back at a top Australian heart surgeon who suggested people could use his books as toilet paper.

Dr Nikki Stamp shared a Twitter post on March 5, recommending bathroom tissue options should people find themselves empty handed as panic buying clears shelves across the country.

‘If you do run out of toilet paper, here are some suitable alternatives: Anything written by Pete Evans, Medical Medium, Jason Fung, Mark Hyman, Dr Oz The ‘How Not to Die’ book 50 Shades of Gray,’ she wrote.

But Pete fired back, stating the glossy pages of his books were not suitable for the task.

‘Funnily enough, all my cookbooks are in glossy paper, so she would probably find it hard to wipe her bum with,’ he told The Sunday Telegraph
