Expert advice: Emily appeared on Loose Women on Monday to discuss the mental health of children amid lockdown

Both he and wife Emily have had the virus during the past year, with Emily appearing on Loose Women on Monday to discuss the mental health of children amid lockdown.

‘I think it’s completely normal a lot of parents are going to be worrying about how this is going to affect them going forward. I think there are so many factors, it’s really complex. It’s different for everybody.

‘With the multiple lockdowns we’ve had and school closures, a lot of kids are probably feeling very socially isolated, they’ve lost their routine and structure and a lot of coping measures they probably had to deal with stresses in their life before the Covid pandemic, they can’t draw on those anymore.

‘They’re on the internet a lot more. Maybe cyber bullying, maybe less physical exercise, I think all of these things are going to play into increased numbers of mental health presentations in children that we’re seeing.’

Speaking about how she is dealing with it with her own son and daughter, she shared: ‘We are doing our best day by day. Trying some routine and structure. While everything else is chaos around them, it’s important to have routine. Activities and exercise.’

She reflected on having Covid ‘almost a year ago – which sounds crazy’, saying ‘we knew less then, so I felt fearful.’

She went on: ‘I kept the children away for two weeks. But when Pete had it I felt quite relaxed. He had anxiety even though he is a healthy person who exercises – but he was still very worried.’

Emily explained that the ‘scary stories in the media impacted him’ but that ‘other than that he was a good patient.’

Asked whether having the virus ‘cured Pete of telling dad jokes’, Emily insisted it didn’t.
