Trump effectively declared victory in the deadlocked election at 2.30am on Wednesday morning, calling Tuesday’s election a ‘fraud on the American people’ and saying that he was going to the Supreme Court to demand that ‘all voting stop.’

‘Frankly we did win this election,’ he said. ‘We want all voting to stop. We don’t want them to find any ballots at four in the morning and add them to the list,’ Trump said.

He set the stage for a titanic struggle with Biden over the millions of ballots which are still to be counted – and which might not be fully counted until as late as Friday.

With Trump having kept Florida, Texas and Ohio – the biggest prizes from the battleground – the election effectively comes down to Pennsylvania and Michigan, where millions of votes remain uncounted. Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina were also counting as he spoke.

Biden took the lead in Wisconsin, by under 10,000 votes, when just before 5am Wednesday votes from Milwaukee County dropped. That county went for Biden in a big way – 317,251 for the Democrat, compared to 134,355 votes for Trump.

Fingers crossed: Trump effectively declared victory in the deadlocked election at 2.30am on Wednesday morning, calling Tuesday's election a 'fraud on the American people'
