Pumpkin juggles lies as she keeps her pregnancy a secret on Mama June: Road To Redemption

Lauryn ‘Pumpkin’ Shannon discovered last week that she was pregnant with her second child.

But she did her best to keep the pregnancy a secret from her mother ‘Mama’ June Shannon and her sister/ward Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson on Friday’s episode of Mama June: Road To Redemption.

Pumpkin also threatened a rift with her husband Josh after inviting June for her first visit to their home without even giving him a heads-up.

The episode picks up with Josh’s shocked expression after his wife Pumpkin handed him her pregnancy test, revealing she was expecting their second child.

‘How did this happen?’ he asks in a daze.

‘Well, when two people love each other very much…’ Pumpkin teases him.

Despite his initial speechlessness, Josh seems happy, just off-guard.

‘I’ll be your baby momma for the second time,’ Pumpkin continues, adding in a confessional recording, ‘It’s gonna be great.’

‘There’s nothing in our life that we haven’t been able to move past,’ she says. 

But Pumpkin is in no rush to tell her family, as she worries it will upset her sister Alana, who feared she was a burden on everyone in the previous episode.

Just then, Alana coincidentally walks into the room and sees Josh and Pumpkin talking, but they awkwardly play it off as if nothing happened.

‘Just chillin’ like a villain,’ Pumpkin says unconvincingly.

She has problems with her younger sister later in the day, when she throws a fit after Pumpkin asks her to help carry in some groceries.

Once they get into the kitchen, Alana just tosses the bags of food onto the floor to go back to her school Zoom session.

She further annoys Pumpkin when she calls out from the living and asks her big sister to make her a snack.

Pumpkin suggests an apple, but Alana wants Fudge Rounds instead, which she knows she’s not supposed to be eating after her father Mike ‘Sugar Bear’ Thompson revealed he had diabetes and she might be at risk as well.

Pumpkin ignores her and throws an apple at her in annoyance.

Meanwhile, Josh meets up with his friend Cody for some beers to share the news of his wife’s pregnancy and to celebrate one last time before he has to find a job.

But after plenty of drinks they decide to get Josh a tattoo at the parlor next door.

When he arrives home, Pumpkin is suffering from morning sickness in the bathroom and is hunched over the toilet.

Josh thinks that’s a good time to show off the tattoo he got of a pumpkin with her nickname written on it, which gets a shocked look out of her, as she thinks he should have been looking for jobs ‘or at least holding my hair back’ instead of drinking and getting a tattoo.

Later, she folds laundry while chatting with her daughter Ella, who says she wants a ‘little cake’ at her upcoming birthday party.

‘There’s gonna be a lot of fat people here. So we’re gonna need a big cake,’ Pumpkin jokes.

Ella asks for her Gigi, or Mama June, to come to the party, and her mother reluctantly agrees.

Then there’s a short scene in which Sugar Bear’s wife Jennifer meets June’s sister-in-law Janice for lunch.

She explains why she kicked out Mike and says he’s now allowed to see Alana, but he’s not to go near Josh or Pumpkin.

They wrap up the conversation by fat shaming June and joking about her wearing a two-piece bathing suit at the beach.

‘Cheers to June keeping her fat a** in Florida,’ says Janice.

June’s struggling to hang up framed photos with adhesive at her home as they fall to the ground and shatter when she gets a call from Pumpkin to invite her and her boyfriend Geno to Ella’s birthday party.

‘Even though me and Mama have very different opinions about how to be the best mother, she is a good Gigi to Ella,’ Pumpkin admits in a confessional moment later.

June is just excited to ‘be under the same roof’ as her daughters, though Pumpkin hasn’t bothered to consult Josh about it yet.

She even offers to let her mother spend the night in their house, despite not having even shared the address with her before.

After the call, June and Geno head to a local toy store near their Florida home where she seems to snap up everything in sight for her granddaughter.

Back at home, Pumpkin reveals she’s been hiding sweats in the storage drawer under her oven as she goes to town on some cupcakes and candy.

But Alana catches her when she walks into the kitchen and thinks she’s a hypocrite, though Pumpkin knows she’s just hungry because of stress and her pregnancy. 

Pumpkin tries to clarify that Alana shouldn’t eat the unhealthy food because she needs to lose weight and she has a higher risk of diabetes, but the younger sister just claims that she doesn’t have diabetes, despite not having been to a doctor yet to get tested.

While they bicker over Alana’s unhealthy overeating, Josh is seen visiting local business and handing out his résumé, but no one seems to be hiring.

In a moment of desperation he visits Sugar Bear’s landscaping shop, and he agrees to give Josh a job as payback for letting him camp out on his lawn for a few days when Jennifer kicked him out of the house.

Josh also blurts out that Pumpkin is pregnant during the meeting, before swearing Mike to secrecy.

Back at home, Pumpkin and Alana are relaxing on the couch with their sister Jessica and eating sugary snacks.

Alana says she likes that Pumpkin is eating sugary foods now, and proceeds to have a competition to see who can squirt a tube of fruit-flavored goo down their throats fastest.

Josh arrives after the contest and admits he got a job with Sugar Bear, which gets a strong mocking from Pumpkin, though he tells her she needs to cut out the sniping so that he doesn’t get fired.

As he gets up to leave he gets stuck in the tiny pink chair he sat in and falls sideways on to the floor, which gets a genuine laugh out of his family and even the film crew.

The next day he’s seen loading up landscaping equipment with Mike 

‘I know everybody gives Sugar Bear s***, but he’s trying to fix his relationship with his daughter, so I believe he’s got his priorities right,’ Josh says sympathetically in a confessional recording.

He invites Sugar Bear to Ella’s birthday as a kind gesture, unaware that June is also coming. 

After work, Mike goes home to Jennifer, who hounds him about lying after he says he hired a new guy.

He admits that it’s Josh and even lets slip that Pumpkin is pregnant, which gets a devilish look out of Jennifer as she vows to tell everyone about the pregnancy before Pumpkin has even announced it.

The time comes for Pumpkin and Josh’s family’s visit to her Aunt Doe Doe’s house for dinner, which they’ve done weekly ever since June started to struggle with addiction.

The dinner has plenty of hearty food, and Alana makes up a plate with two pulled pork sandwiches slathered in barbecue sauce, plus plenty of potato chips and some corn as she skips the salad.

‘Pumpkin has been all over me this week about food,’ she complains after her sister remarks on the lack of salad. ‘This is Doe Doe’s house, calm down!’

Then Pumpkin reveals that June is coming to Ella’s birthday party, which Doe Doe thinks is both ‘a good thing and a bad thing.’

Despite her history, she won’t be drug tested at the party as a sign that they trust her more now.

Alana caps off the meal with desert by brining on cookie to Pumpkin and keeping a stack of five to herself, which elicits more criticism.

‘I don’t understand why everybody is pushing this diabetes thing. I feel fine!’ she shouts, adding, ‘I’m gonna eat what I want, when I want.’ 

‘Girl, you’re asking for a diabetic coma,’ Pumpkin warns her.

The episode ends with Alana threatening to move in with June in Florida so that she can eat whatever she wants, which seems to foreshadow more issues with her diet.
