Racing heiress Kate Waterhouse shares tribute to her legendary horse trainer mother Gai Waterhouse as she receives an Order of Australia medal

Kate Waterhouse has shared a tribute to her legendary horse trainer mother Gai Waterhouse. 

On Tuesday, the racing heiress shared photos to Instagram showing her mother, 66, receiving an Order of Australia medal. 

She explained in the caption: ‘So proud of my mum @gai_waterhouse for receiving an Order of Australia medal today for distinguished service to the thoroughbred industry, particularly as a leading trainer, and as a role model for young women.’

The accompanying photos showed Kate posing with her mother, along with friends and family at Government House, Sydney. 

In one image, Gai beamed as she showed off her ornate medal in a blue velvet box.  

Gai won her first Melbourne Cup in 2013 with her horse Fiorente and became the first Australian woman to train a winner of that race.

She was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2007, and is often referred to as ‘first lady of Australian racing’.

Racing heiress Kate and her former sports star husband Luke Ricketson purchased an incredible $17.8million mansion in Sydney’s Balmoral in December.   

The former owner purchased the stunning property for $5.3million back in 2003.

Kate and Luke tied the knot in Sicily, Italy on June 28, 2012.   

Popsugar reported at the time that Kate wore a Vera Wang dress, and the newlyweds were surrounded by 80 guests on their big day. 

The couple share two young daughters: Sophia Edie, six and Grace Gabrie, three.
