Earlier this month it was reported that King has signed on to direct a film adaptation of the comic book series Bitter Root, about a family of Black monster hunters.

The film, which will be set amid the Harlem Renaissance, will be produced by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, according to Variety.

The Image Comics story is set in 1924 in Manhattan’s Harlem neighborhood and follows a fractured family of once-great monster hunters confronted with an overwhelming evil force that arrives in New York City.

After nearly a decade of directing television episodes and TV movies between acting projects, King made her feature film debut last year with the historical drama One Night In Miami.

The film, based on the play of the same name by Kemp Powers, centers on a single fictional night when Malcolm X, Muhammed Ali, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke come together to talk about the issues of the day following Ali’s defeat of Sonny Liston in 1964.

The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, though King was shut out of the Best Director category.

She previously won the best supporting actress Oscar for her performance in the 2018 drama If Beale street Could Talk.
