Samira Wiley spotted for the first time since wife Lauren Morelli welcomed their daughter George

Samira Wiley was seen for the first time since revealing that her wife Lauren Morelli welcomed a baby girl one month ago.

The 34-year-old Handmaid’s Tale actress was spotted cutting a casual figured as she left her home in Los Angeles on Sunday in grey sweatpants and a black t-shirt.

The star surprised the world last week with the news of daughter George Elizabeth’s birth in an Instagram post.  

She paired the relaxing look with a light-colored denim jacket, a navy baseball cap and blue Nike sneakers.

Samira hid behind a medical grade face covering as she greeted a driver who was picking her up outside her driveway.

She has been busy with the couple’s newborn girl, who arrived on April 11, even posting an exhausted-looking selfie to her Instagram on Sunday.

‘Just all the way tired,’ she captioned the sweet snap of her carrying her sleeping baby as they laid together at home.

She had on a white t-shirt and blue hoodie in the shot as she tried to keep her eyes open for the camera.

Her celebrity friends were quick to comment on the post, with Evan Rachel Wood writing, ‘For the rest of your life’, and Holly Robinson Peete adding: ‘Sleep when they do!’ 

The Orange Is The New Black performer first broke the news with a touching Mother’s Day post celebrating her wife of four years.

‘Happy 1st Mother’s Day to my beautiful wife, who four weeks ago today after laboring for almost 3 days gave birth to our first child—our gorgeous daughter, George [heart emoji],’ Samira captioned her post. 

‘Welcome to the world, babygirl. We love you and we thank you for giving us the best 1st Mother’s Day two ladies could ask for. George Elizabeth 4.11.2021,’ she added.

Although the couple – who married in 2017 – had not publicly announced Lauren’s pregnancy, Samira admitted in 2018 they were keen to have children together. 

She said: ‘Yeah, we think about that! We are so happy, so in love.’ 

Wiley opened up about the inspiration behind their daughter’s name during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday.

She remarked, ‘We got to teach the new generation about this because I wish that I had some really in-depth story to tell people about George, cause I know that’s what people want, and you got to give the people what they want.’

Wiley then bluntly stated, ‘I just really like the name, I think it’s really cute.’ 

She also remarked that she had looked into the history behind her daughter’s moniker and learned that it was used for girls over a century ago. 

‘I tried to do some research, I found out in the 1800s, it was a girl’s name but people don’t believe me when I say that,’ she recalled.

The Primetime Emmy-winning actress then expressed that the female best friend of popular children’s book character Nancy Drew was named George, although both she and Kimmel admitted to having never read any stories with the detective.

The couple met on the set of Orange Is The New Black, on which Lauren worked as a writer and Samira played Poussey Washington. 

Although the actress’ 38-year-old spouse instantly felt a connection with her future wife, she was married to her husband, Stephen Basilone, at the time.

Morelli eventually filed for divorce from her former partner in 2014 and began dating the performer, who popped the question two years into their relationship.

The couple went on to tie the knot in 2017 during a dreamlike ceremony in Palm Springs, California.
