Silver Spoons star Ricky Schroder calls out a Costco manager for not letting him in without a mask

Ricky Schroder gave a Costco supervisor a hard time this week as he tried to enter a Costco location in California without wearing a mask.

The 51-year-old former child star filmed the confrontation as he berated the supervisor about not being allowed to enter in the wake of CDC guidance that fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear masks, except where required by local laws.

Schroder capped off his stunt, which he posted on Saturday, by getting a refund on his Costco membership and urging his followers to do the same.

Schroder, who was arrested twice in less than a month for domestic violence in 2019, opened the video by asking for the supervisor’s name and position within the store.

‘And why aren’t you letting me in?’ he continued. 

‘Because, in the state of California, and in the county of Los Angeles, and Coscto, there’s been no change —’ he begins, before Schroder interrupts him to falsely claim that there has been a change.

Schroder cites reports that Costco will no longer require shoppers to wear masks and will operate on an honor system as to who has been vaccinated, but that’s only the case when state and local rules allow shoppers to go unmasked.

The supervisor replies that, ‘Costco always goes above and beyond when following the law, and the mandate in California has not changed.’

He also adds that there’s a possibility that the mask mandate could be changed or lifted by June.

‘Oh, if they allow us?’ Schroder says indignantly. ‘If they grant us that, our kings? The people in power? You’re going to listen to these people? They destroyed our economy.’

The supervisor keeps his cool and stays professional amid the rant, explaining again that Costco is only following the law in California and Los Angeles. 

Schroder then turns the camera on himself and urges his followers to end their memberships and to get refunds for them at California Costcos.

The supervisor then adds that the mask mandate still applies to all grocery stories in California and that he’s personally unaware of any locations that are breaking the law and allowing everyone to shop unmasked in the state.

The store’s manager then brings out a receipt for his refund, and Schroder reiterates his call for his fans to end their memberships before leaving. 

‘Boycott Costco till they act like a Free American Company…not [Chinese flag emoji],’ Schroder wrote in his caption.  

It’s unclear if Schroder has been vaccinated against the novel coronavirus, or if he was attempting to enter maskless while unvaccinated. 

Later on Saturday, he posted a warning noticed sent to him by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) about an incident in which he allegedly went without a mask during a JetBlue flight.

He got off with a warning, but the letter added that a second violation could result in a penalty of up to $13,910 and could disqualify him from being in the TSA PreCheck program.

The actor appeared to threaten an ‘armed conflict’ if mask mandates continued to be enforced in his caption.

‘If we allow them to achieve their goals of Discrimination of Americans using Medical Tyranny, thereby Limiting Movement & Commerce for some there’s no hope other than armed conflict to resolve this,’ he wrote. ‘This is why their plans must be completely destroyed. Not partially….no half measures. There’s no where to fall back to. Stand & Fight. It’s win or lose.’

Several social media users lambasted Schroder for his actions and referenced him helping to post bail for Kyle Rittenhouse, who is on trial for shooting and killing two men and severely injuring a third during the unrest following protests inspired by the police killing of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

In November, Schroder told the New York Post that he donated to the accused murderer’s bail because ‘It made me mad.

‘This boy is innocent and he will be proven innocent,’ he claimed. ‘I did what any father should’ve done, and that’s get a kid out of jail that doesn’t deserve to be there.’

During his confrontation, Schroder was seen wearing a baseball cap with a variation on the ‘Thin Blue Line’ flag, an altered American flag done in black and white except for a single blue strip signifying law enforcement.

Although it’s popular among police and those who support them, the flag has also been described as being in anti-Black Lives Matter.

Others criticized Schroder for berating a service employee doing his job for a political stunt.  

‘This isn’t about Ricky Schroder’s politics or even his stance on masks… ANYONE who feels the need to publicly berate retail employees like this — over policies they can’t control — is simply just an a*****e,’ wrote filmmaker Andy Signore.

Some also poked fun at his past as a child actor.

One user joked, ‘1980s Ricky Schroder: Plays a spoiled rich child on TV. 2020s Ricky Schroder: Is a spoiled rich child in real life.’

Another person joked about Schroder in the context of other late-career right-wing actors.

‘Ricky Schroder is the Kevin Sorbo of Scott Baio’s [sic],’ they tweeted.

One user used a still of Schroder crying with Faye Dunaway from his 1979 film The Champ, one of the roles he’s best known for.

‘Ricky Schroder after being told he can’t enter Costco without a mask,’ they joked.

Schroder seems to have taken a break from acting in recent years, as his IMDb page lists his last on-screen credit as being from 2016.
