Joe Keery claimed Stranger Things season four will be the ‘a lot scarier’ than the Netflix hit’s previous outings.

The actor, 28, teased what’s to come in the forthcoming season in an interview with Total Film Magazine on Friday, as he chatted about his new film Free Guy.

Of the show’s hotly-anticipated return to the small screen, he said: ‘Oh man, it’s pretty amazing – the Duffer brothers have really done it again.

‘I think that this year – and I know I say this every single year – but this is definitely going to be a lot scarier than prior years, because last year was pretty dark.’

Season three saw the characters face a new threat in the form of the Mind Flayer, a powerful being with complete control of the Upside Down that started to take over the minds of various Hawkins’ residents.

Using Max’s brother Billy (Dacre Montgomery) as its main mark, the Mind Flayer tried to kill Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) for closing the gate between the real world and the Upside Down, but was ultimately defeated.

Keery plays Steve Harrington in the Netflix juggernaut, and though production had begun on season four filming was suspended due to the coronavirus crisis.

There is no indication when production could start back on on the fourth season, or when it may in fact debut on Netflix.

Season three ended with Jim Hopper’s apparent death after he went missing after he and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) stormed a secret Russian facility that was trying to open a portal into the Upside Down.

But the teaser trailer for season four revealed he was actually taken captive following the dramatic end of the show, and was in a prison camp.

David Harbour, who plays Hopper, revealed the show was meant to return in early 2021 during a live Q&A session on Instagram last month.

He shared: ‘[Season four was] supposed to come out early next year, I think, although I don’t have authority on this.’

Going on to talk about the delay in production, David added: ‘I got an email from the producers saying we’re shutting down for a couple of weeks.

‘We don’t know what any of this means. My hope is we get it up and running as soon as possible but I also suggested to Lily [Allen, his girlfriend] that season four should be animated.’
