Sylvia Jeffreys fights back tears on Today Extra as she reveals for the first time she underwent IVF

Sylvia Jeffreys, 34, breaks down in tears as she reveals for the first time she underwent IVF to have her son Oscar with husband Peter Stefanovic during emotional Today Extra segment

Channel Nine star Sylvia Jeffreys revealed for the first time on Wednesday that she underwent IVF to have her son, Oscar.

The 34-year-old, who welcomed her first child with husband Peter Stefanovic, 38, in February, broke down in tears as she discussed her own struggles with infertility on Today Extra.

Sylvia was speaking to mother Brooke Campbell about IVF treatment and the ‘daunting and overwhelming’ decision of what to do with leftover frozen embryos once a family no longer wants to use them.

As Brooke discussed the options available, a clearly-emotional Sylvia said: ‘Brooke, I know from my personal experience with IVF that so much goes into having a successful embryo.’

As she fought through her tears, she continued: ‘…and having something sitting there that gives you the opportunity to make life for your family. How are you and your husband coping?’

Alongside Brooke on the panel was IVF specialist Dr Ric Gordon, who discussed the four options available for unwanted frozen embyros; storing, donating to science, donating to a couple and disposal.

What is IVF?

According to IVF Australia, IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) is a procedure by which an egg and sperm are joined together in a specialised laboratory.

The fertilized egg grows in a protected environment for some days, before it is transferred into the woman’s uterus and thus increasing the chance of pregnancy.

According to the website, the success rates range from 34.9 per cent per embryo transfer leading to a live birth for patients under 30 years, to 8.7 per cent for patients over 40 years.

Health insurer Bupa says the typical cost for one IVF cycle is $8000 to $10,000, with Medicare covering around 48%.

Clearly still emotional, Sylvia continued: ‘It’s such a fascinating topic, and Brooke obviously something so raw for you right now, so thank you very much for sharing.’

‘The silver lining in having unused embryos is that you’ve had your miracles. You’ve had your babies. So that’s the beautiful part of it,’ she added.

At the end of the segment, Sylvia’s co-host David Campbell ask if she was alright, before giving her a supportive touch on the hand.

Sylvia and husband Peter had made no previous comment on their struggles with infertility.

They announced their pregnancy in August 2019 two years after getting married, writing on Instagram: ‘We’re having a baby boy and we’re totally over the moon!!’

In June, Sylvia told Today Extra how she was finding motherhood so far.

She said on the show: ‘It’s just been the most wonderful and surprising experience.’

‘It is every emotion at its extreme and all mixed in together. It is an extreme and deep joy, it is rational anxiety.’

‘But mostly just joy and wonder, and in awe of this beautiful little boy,’ she added.

Peter and Sylvia were an item on screen before they got together – co-hosting Today’s Weekend Summer Series in 2013.

‘I think it was pretty obvious, certainly was to everyone around me – my mum and my sister, in particular, knew that there was something there,’ Sylvia told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2016, when asked if it was love at first sight.

‘That was the first time we met face to face and it was soon after that that we started courting.’
