T.J. Osborne of Brothers Osborne says coming out as gay is ‘a weight off my shoulders’

He came out as gay in an interview with Time magazine on Wednesday.

And in an interview set to air Thursday on The Ellen DeGeneres show, country music star T.J. Osborne shared that it had been ‘a really wild experience’.

‘To come out publicly in one big foul swoop… was in some ways nice, in other ways it’s made for a very emotional day,’ he said.

‘I wish I had done this a long time ago,’ he added.

‘Not only is it a weight off my shoulders to tell my truth … right now I feel so incredibly loved,’ he revealed.

He added that is so grateful for all the support that’s come his way. 

‘Maybe I built it up to be a bigger hurdle than it was the whole time,’ he mused.

In his interview with Time, he discussed his sexuality openly and shared that he’s ‘very comfortable being gay.’

Those closest to him have known for a long time, he said, but the COVID-19 pandemic and the accompanying lockdown had made him feel like it was time to be out publicly. 

‘I’m ready to put this behind me… I find myself being guarded for not wanting to talk about something that I personally don’t have a problem with. That feels so strange,’ he explained.

Growing up in a small blue collar town in Maryland, he kept his sexuality hidden despite knowing at a young age.

‘It was so lonely and isolating. It made me resent people,’ he shared.  

The revelation that his is gay makes T.J. the only openly homosexual artist signed to a major country music record label. 

He and John, as the Brothers Osborne, have received seven Grammy nominations, won four CMA Awards and had seven of their songs become Top 40 hits.  

‘I don’t think I’m going to get run off the stage in Chicago…but in a rural town playing a county fair? I’m curious how this will go,’ he told Time.
